Chelsea’s proposed £19m move for Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis may have hit the rocks, after it emerged today that the player himself may have to fund some of the deal with the Blues apparently unwilling to shell out the large sum.

If a deal isn’t reached, here’s five alternative left-back options they could take a look at instead.

5) Alberto Moreno – Sevilla

The 21-year-old Spanish international was a big target for Liverpool earlier in the summer, but talks broke down after the Reds refused to meet Sevilla’s £18m valuation for the talented young star. The money is steep, but to be a full Spanish international at such a young age proves that Moreno has the potential to develop into one of the best in the business.

4) Ricardo Rodriguez – Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg’s Swiss left-back is also only 21-years-old, and contributed more assists (9) in European football last term than any other defender, thanks to his sweet left foot. Again, Liverpool have been merited with an interest in Rodriguez, but the Blues have shown with their captures of Willian and Mohamed Salah in the past that they can easily beat the Reds to targets.

3) Marcos Rojo – Sporting Lisbon

A rumoured target for West Ham and Liverpool, the £12m asking price should be well within Chelsea’s price bracket. Rojo starts for Argentina at left-back, and loves to get forward. He’s technically very capable, and can also play at centre-back, which would be an extra boost for the Blues with David Luiz joining PSG.

2) Fabio Coentrao – Real Madrid

Real Madrid will consider selling the Portuguese fullback this summer, with Brazilian Marcelo already occupying the position at the Bernanbeu. Manchester United and Chelsea were linked with Coentrao at the end of the season, but with the former having signed Luke Shaw, the Blues could have a free run at the 26-year-old.

1) Ben Davies – Swansea City

With Cesar Azpilicueta already at the club, it might be wise for Chelsea to bring in a young player rather than a top level established one, who would be willing to start on the bench. Davies has quietly impressed for Swansea in recent seasons, and earned strong links to Tottenham as a result. Having played for the Welsh side, he knows how to retain possession, and can pass the ball while providing an attacking option up the flank as well. The Blues could do worse than consider the 21-year-old this summer.
