Manchester united boss Louis van Gaal has already made two big money signings this summer, bringing in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera so far – and it doesn’t look like this will be the end of his business after being charged with fixing the squad that limped to seventh in the Premier League last term.

If all goes to plan, here’s the squad the legendary Dutchman could be working with in 2014/15…

Goalkeepers:

David de Gea

The Spaniard is now well and truly established as United’s no.1, and he could even take the jersey from Iker Casillas in the national side following the Real Madrid man’s awful World Cup showing.

Anders Lindegaard

The Dane provides ample backup to de Gea.

Ben Amos

Surprisingly, United’s third choice keeper is already 24-years-old! There’s a chance he’ll be loaned out again next term.

Defenders:

Rafael

Rafael will hope to re-find the form that saw him rated as one of the country’s best right-backs under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Daryl Janmaat

The Dutchman could arrive at Old Trafford to compete with Rafael, after impressing LVG on international duty with Holland.

Stefan de Vrij

Like Janmaat, de Vrij has impressed LVG with the Netherlands, and with United badly in need of central defensive improvements following the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic – the 22-year-old could sign after the World Cup.

Thomas Vermaelen

United have made a final take it or leave it £20m bid for Mats Hummels, but with Borussia Dortmund unlikely to sell, Arsenal’s Belgian could provide a cheaper more realistic alternative.

Phil Jones

Jones will hope for a starting spot next term.

Jonny Evans

The Northern Irishman will likely have to content himself with a spot on the bench.

Chris Smalling

Smalling will be retained because of his versatility.

Luke Shaw

The teenager wonderkid has already arrived for a monstrous £27m fee, which could rise to £31m.

Patrice Evra

Evra will likely mentor Shaw, after signing a one year contract extension to prolong his stay with the Red Devils.

Midfielders:

Ander Herrera

The Spaniard has signed for £28m from Athletic Bilbao, meaning Marouane Fellaini will likely be shown the exit door, as could Tom Cleverley.

Arturo Vidal

Vidal has expressed an interest in joining United, and the club would be happy to shell out the mammoth fee required to convince Juventus to sell this summer.

William Carvalho

Carvalho will cost United £37m, but the Portuguese 22-year-old powerhouse will provide the combativeness and energy the midfield cried out for last season.

Michael Carrick

Carrick will likely be retained, but expect him to play a less crucial role with an influx of new midfielders expected.

Darren Fletcher

The same can be said for the Scottish midfielder, while Anderson will be found a permanent transfer away from Old Trafford.

Juan Mata

Mata will hope to continue his impressive form from the end of last season, although it will be interesting to see where LVG deploys him.

Antonio Valencia

Valencia’s pace and direction makes him a useful bench option, but Nani could be sold.

Ashley Young

Young will likely play a peripheral part, but with his high wages, it’s unlikely United will be able to sell.

Memphis Depay

Rated as ‘The Next Cristiano Ronaldo’, Depay has encouraged interest from Old Trafford ahead of a possible move. He is pacy, can dribble, and can play on either flank as a wing forward.

Shinji Kagawa

The Japanese playmaker has the technical and creative attributes that could please van Gaal.

Adnan Januzaj

The wonderkid will hope to continue his meteoric rise under his new Dutch boss.

Attackers:

Danny Welbeck

Welbeck provides an excellent squad option as he can play either wide or up top.

Robin van Persie

RVP is playing superbly under van Gaal for the Dutch national side, and United fans will hope the pair continue their excellent relationship at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney

The country’s highest paid player will likely continue in his pivotal no.10 role. Javier Hernandez could leave permanently.

James Wilson

The teenager impressed on debut last season, and could be sent on loan to gain experience, as should his youth teammate Tom Lawrence.
