Man United are preparing a massive move for Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo after learning that the Portuguese star could be made available for sale by the Bernabeu side this summer.

CaughtOffside understands that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has set his sights on Colombian pair James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao and as such could be ready to sell Ronaldo back to his former Old Trafford employers.

The La Liga side invested heavily in their squad last summer as they spent £120m to bring in Gareth Bale, Isco and Asier Illarramendi as part of a move to plan for the future and Perez is aware that in order to make similarly big moves in the transfer market this summer he will need to sell a number of first team players.

Though Ronaldo is clearly a prized asset the Spanish giants may feel that given that the Portuguese international is closing in on 30 years of age this could be their last chance to cash-in on his services and with there being concerns about his long term fitness due to a lingering knee injury Real Madrid are ready to listen to big money offers for the Balon d’Or winner.

Man United are keen to erase the memory of a shockingly bad campaign under former boss David Moyes and feel that a move for Cristiano Ronaldo would represent a real statement of intent and the club’s owners are ready to back Louis van Gaal with the funds to make a significant offer.

The club’s chief executive Ed Woodward is said to be set for ‘secret’ talks with Ronaldo and Real Madrid with an offer of £70m set to be tabled.

Man United feel that they commercial benefits of such a move would more than cover the cost of such a bid, which would represent a British transfer record.

The Premier League side are ready to enlist the help of Sir Alex Ferguson as they look to re-sign Ronaldo, knowing that the pair still enjoy a strong relationship.

Having helped Real Madrid to their tenth European Cup/Champions League triumph in May Ronaldo may feel he has achieved all he wished to in the Spanish capital and as such this could aid discussions to persuade the attacker to return to the club he represented with distinction from 2003 to 2009.

Ronaldo racked up 118 goals in 292 appearances for Man United prior to his £80m move to Spain five years ago and the star performer has gone from strength to strength and has scored an astonishing 252 goals in 246 appearances for Real Madrid.

Though the sale of Perez would not go down well with Real Madrid’s fan-base president Perez feels that the use of funds to bring in a new wave of Galaticos will appease the club’s supporters and such a transfer policy would certainly go some way to assisting their attempts to meet UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines.
