(Pictures) Five Shocking Recent Away Kits From Experimental Liverpool

A look at some weird Liverpool away kits of recent times.5) 2013/14 third kit

Although Brendan Rodgers’ side put in some majestic displays to score over 100 goals in the Premier League in 2013/14, there’s no doubt that this effort of a third-choice kit was a little unusual. The top half alone with it’s strange sections of white, black, purple underneath yellow writing all bundled together isn’t exactly easy on the eyes. With stripey socks to boot, this really was one colourful kit selection, and it’s almost surprising they managed to pull it off without something clashing with the opposition!

4) 2012/13 third kit

Another ugly third choice kit from the previous season was memorably worn by Luis Suarez here in his second hat-trick in successive appearances against Norwich City at Carrow Road. Quite what the need is for a black/white/orange kit is when the simple red home kit would have sufficed against this opposition is not exactly clear, and if not for this memorable match it would be pretty surprising to see fans flocking out to buy this one.

3) 2008/09 away kit

A throwback to an away kit from the late 1980s, but not the most attractive of second strips here for Liverpool. This all-grey effort seems a bit boring and not like anything the Merseyside giants have worn many times before, but it is at least remembered fondly now for the kit worn here by Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in a superb 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Something seemed to work for Liverpool though, as they enjoyed a good season, just finishing second to United after running them close for the title.

2) 2011/12 third kit

Not an attractive look for Liverpool’s third kit in the 2011/12 season, with the white and light shade of blue or cyan looking more like a Marseille shirt than anything the Reds have ever worn in their history. The sponsors probably won’t have loved it much either, with the light blue writing probably too bright to read in a nasty colour clash with the white top half of the shirt. In the end, this kit was barely worn by Kenny Dalglish’s side that season, and that’s probably for the best.

1) 2014/15 third kit

Another experimental effort from Liverpool’s shirt designers, with a black, grey and red stripey third kit released today for the club to wear next season. The Merseysiders have gone with a more traditional yellow away strip as their first choice to wear in games away from home, but we will presumably be seeing Steven Gerrard and co. in this interesting new look at some point as well. It is worth noting as well that, despite a number of black kits for the club in recent years, Liverpool never had an away shirt of that colour in their entire history until 2002, when the club really started to try out new looks, including some of the above.
