Schalke have rubbished reports linking star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with a move to Liverpool.

Sky Sports have revealed that the German club have had no contact from the Reds over the possible move.

Huntelaar also played down the links with Liverpool last week, saying he planned talks over his future after his involvement with the Netherlands at the World Cup had been concluded.

The 30-year-old has scored 59 league goals in 100 appearances for Schalke, since joining them from Real Madrid in 2010. He has been billed as one of many potential replacements for Barcelona-bound Luis Suarez, but the German side’s general manager Horst Heldt has assured fans that there has been no contact with Liverpool regarding Huntelaar, and that they have no interest in selling the former Ajax hit-man this summer.

“Most recently, I’ve read that Liverpool FC should have interest in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar,” Heldt told the club’s official website.

“Liverpool, Klaas-Jan and also his adviser have not contacted us, and we also have no interest in selling the player.”

Huntelaar is entering the final year of his contract at the Veltins-Arena and is in talks over a new deal.

Liverpool have already signed Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can this summer, while they are thought to be closing in on a move for Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, as Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers prepares his team for a return to Champions League football.

However, with Suarez’s departure looking increasingly likely, the Reds will be keen to bring in a striker to replace last season’s Premier League top goalscorer.
