Liverpool’s Best Players At The 2014 World Cup Featuring Controversial Biter And £75m Barcelona Target Luis Suarez

The finest players at the tournament in Brazil from Anfield.

With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil coming to a conclusion on Sunday it’s time to reflect on the tournament and pick out the standout performances.

For this piece CaughtOffside takes a look at Liverpool and the five players from Anfield that impressed the most in South America.

5. Steven Gerrard, England

It was hardly an outstanding competition for the English as they were eliminated from Group D without winning a single match, but their captain was one of the better players during that time.

The 34-year-old is considering his international future following that early exit, but Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson will be hoping Gerrard decides to stay a little longer as he is by far the best passer in the team.

4. Mamadou Sakho, France

The Frenchman may not have showered himself in glory on Merseyside following his £18m switch from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but national team manager Didier Deschamps is a big fan.

Deschamps preferred Sakho in the starting XI ahead of Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny and Eliaquim Mangala of FC Porto and the 23-year-old could well develop into a top-class defender if he can banish his erratic behaviour.

3. Daniel Sturridge, England

Like his skipper the 24-year-old was one of the few English player to come back from the World Cup with any credit, after scoring a fine goal against Italy in his side’s 2-1 opening defeat.

Sturridge was always looking to get involved in the attack as well and Reds fans will be happy with what they saw from their striker in Brazil.

2. Raheem Sterling, England

There was much hype surrounding this 19-year-old ahead of the tournament after the fine campaign he had for Brendan Rodgers’ side in 2013/14 and credit to Hodgson for giving the teenager a chance.

Against the Italians Sterling was arguably the best player in a white shirt and although his performances dropped, the winger looks to have a great future ahead of him.

1. Luis Suarez, Uruguay

For those of you living under a rock the ever controversial Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini during his side’s final group game and has since earned himself a four-month ban as a result.

FC Barcelona still want to sign the 27-year-old for a whopping £75m however, because of the form the forward showed against England when his two goals earned his nation a 2-1 victory.
