The Best Premier League XI From The 2014 World Cup Featuring New £35m Arsenal Star Alexis Sanchez

The finest team made up of players from the English top tier.

With the 2014 World Cup coming to a close on Sunday, CaughtOffside takes a look at what a team of the tournament would look like made up entirely of stars from the Premier League.

The division did have the most representatives in Brazil after all.

GK – Thibaut Courtois, Belgium and Chelsea

Blues fans must be rubbing their hands with glee as after impressing with Atletico Madrid on-loan over the past three years, their 22-year-old goalkeeper had a good tournament with the Belgians and will arrive in England brimming with confidence.

RB – Mathieu Debuchy, France and Newcastle United

Preferred in the right-back position by national team manager Didier Deschamps ahead of new Manchester City signing Bacary Sagna and Arsenal are also eyeing up the 28-year-old as a replacement for Sagna at the Emirates Stadium.

CB – Kenneth Omeruo, Nigeria and Chelsea

Despite being billed as one of the minnows of the competition this youngster helped the Nigerians progress to the last-16 against the odds with some fine defensive displays that included two clean-sheets and they fought a hard battle against the French before elimination.

CB – Ron Vlaar, Netherlands and Aston Villa

May have missed his penalty against Argentina in a semi-final shootout the Dutch lost on Wednesday, but Vlaar had a good tournament and will have convinced many Villa fans that their captain is s top talent.

LB – Jan Vertonghen, Belgium and Tottenham Hotspur

Although generally operates at centre-back for Spurs, due to a lack of full-backs for Marc Wilmots the 27-year-old has operated at left-back and Vertonghen performed a solid job in what was a good defensive competition for the nation.

CM – Marouane Fellaini, Belgium and Manchester United

Decent central midfielders from the English top tier have been surprisingly hard to come by and although Fellaini had some typically shaky displays, his goal against Algeria was a particular highlight for the United flop.

CM – John Obi Mikel, Nigeria and Chelsea

The second Nigerian who plies his trade at Stamford Bridge – although Omeruo is yet to play a game for them – and although has a reputation of being underwhelming at times, Mikel worked well in a national team looking to keep goals out.

RW – Alexis Sanchez, Chile and Arsenal

The biggest import to the Premier League this summer has to be the £35m acquisition of this forward, who arrived from FC Barcelona on Thursday with a fine reputation and could well be the catalyst Arsene Wenger’s team need for success after a good tournament with the Chileans.

CAM – Oscar, Brazil and Chelsea

Although the hosts were eliminated in spectacular fashion on Tuesday in a 7-1 defeat to Germany, reaching the semi-finals was a good achievement for a Brazilian side that contains very few stars and Oscar netted twice in the competition.

LW – Andre Schurrle, Germany and Chelsea

Jose Mourinho must be pleased that so many of his players have been impressing in Brazil and although Schurrle hasn’t started any games, the forward has three goals at the tournament and looks in good touch.

ST – Robin van Persie, Netherlands and Manchester United

Injury and illness may have prevented the Red Devils ace from truly hitting his peak, but three goals in the opening two matches – including a brilliant header against Spain – means the 30-year-old takes the No.9 spot in our team.
