With Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw having been brought in from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton respectively the Dutch boss has been in regular contact with chief executive Ed Woodward as the Old Trafford side chases three players who have each made a real impact at the World Cup finals in Brazil.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Louis van Gaal will have looked at those present in his squad that occupy midfield roles and may well wonder where goals and assists would come from, which in turn may be the reasoning behind his continued interest in £32m rated playmaker Vidal.

The 27 year old has been a huge success since his move to Juventus three years ago, his efforts in the final third being key to three successive Serie A triumphs, but it appears Man United are hopeful they can lure the Chilean to the Premier League this summer.

Vidal will provide a real creative link between midfield and attack, certainly more so than the likes of Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, though the lack of Champions League football is sure to be something of a obstacle.

Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid)

With there certainly being questions about Man United’s current midfield offering a real threat in the final third there is also surely a similar concern about the effectiveness of the club’s wide attackers to do likewise.

Nani, Ashley Young and Luis Antonio Valencia have offered little in the past season or two and Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria would be a huge improvement on that trio.

The 26 year old Argentine enjoyed a more limited role at the Bernabeu since the arrival of Gareth Bale but still finished the last campaign as the club’s leading assist maker, putting in a man of the match display in the Champions League final to boot.

By all accounts a move to bring the former Benfica man to Man United is in it’s advanced stages with the Metro claiming that Di Maria and Borussia Dortmund centre-back being jointly valued at £75m.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Another area of Man United’s squad that is urgent need of repair is their back-line with the club’s central defensive options having been depleted by the departures of veteran pair Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

A move for highly rated German international Hummels is a sensible one to consider and having seen his Welsfalenstadion side fall further off the Bundesliga title pace and then seen the club’s top-scorer, Robert Lewandowski, join domestic rivals Bayern Munich there is every chance the 25 year old is considering his options.

Hummels has been a solid performer for a number of years and has been excellent during Germany’s run to the World Cup final.
