Power Ranking Liverpool’s Bizarre £135m Reported Transfer Targets From 7-1

Brendan Rodgers is at risk of wasting £75m Luis Suarez windfall…

Liverpool are chasing Southampton duo Jay Rodriguez and Dejan Lovren, Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, Swansea trio Ben Davies, Wilfried Bony and  Michel Vorm, and Sevilla’s talented left-back Alberto Moreno – all of which could end costing Liverpool £135m having already spent £39m on Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert.

These seven players are being chased, according to the Mirror, and we don’t think there really of the calibre to improve a side aiming to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

We’ve decided to rank the potential Liverpool signings from 7-1, from best to worst.

7) Alberto Moreno – Sevilla

Well this one really makes sense, to be fair. Moreno is only 21-years-old, and has already won caps for the Spanish national team following an excellent season with Sevilla. Liverpool badly need left-back reinforcements, and Moreno is proving to be one of the most talented young stars in this position in the whole of Europe. A potential deal fell through earlier in the summer due to a disagreement on the transfer fee, although the Reds would be foolish not to pay the asking price…

6) Lazar Markovic – Benfica

The Serbian winger is imminently arriving at Anfield, and although his £20m fee seems a little steep, his talent makes him an undeniably exciting signing. He can play anywhere in attacking midfield – and will add competition for Raheem Sterling and Coutinho. Although he perhaps can’t be expected to have an immediate impact on the first-team.

5) Dejan Lovren – Southampton

Liverpool need a new centre-back after conceding 50 Premier League goals last season, but have been quoted a very steep £25m for Southampton’s Croatian. This would make him the second most expensive Premier League centre-back of all time behind Rio Ferdinand, and for that kind of money – Reds fans would really hope they’re side was chasing someone already proved as a top, top European quality central defender.

4) Wilfried Bony – Swansea

The powerful Ivorian is the favourite to replace Suarez for £19m from Swansea. In respect to Bony, who did enjoy a good season last time out, he isn’t in the Uruguayan’s league – and Liverpool will be significantly weakened if he does arrive as a direct replacement for the £75m maverick. Reds fans were hoping that with that kind of money, they could go after Karim Benzema, Falcao or Alexis Sanchez.

3) Ben Davies – Swansea

Yes, Davies enjoyed a good season with Swansea – but with Brendan Rodgers promising in May that his side would sign ‘quality’ to come straight into the first-team ahead of a title challenge, his targeting seems strange. He’s talented, and only 21-years-old – but Liverpool are crying out for a new left-back, and Davies is not yet of top drawer.

2) Michel Vorm – Swansea

Liverpool already have Pepe Reina and Simon Mignolet at the club, and have been linked to talented Mexico stopper Guillermo Ochoa, too. Do they really need Swansea’s backup keeper Vorm, who’s fallen down the pecking order at the club due to Lukasz Fabianski’s arrival?

1) Jay Rodriguez – Southampton

With no disrespect to Jay Rodriguez, or any of the other targets mentioned in this list – Liverpool seriously need to widen their horizons from Southampton and Swansea if they want to sign players to actually improve their first-team. Southampton finished eighth last term, and Swansea finished 12th, and Liverpool fans will see Chelsea signing Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal acquiring Alexis Sanchez, and Manchester United targeting Angel di Maria and Arturo Vidal – and question why their club, who finished 2nd last term and has an enormous transfer budget – are trying to buy mid-table Premier League players.
