Diego Costa Competes With Arsenal & Liverpool Stars In The Top 10 Premier League Strikers

Where does Chelsea’s new signing feature on our list?

It’s been a busy 24 hours in the transfer market for Chelsea, securing two new signings from Atletico Madrid in the shape of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis.

Yet it is the former that CaughtOffside is interested in for this, with the forward completing a £32m switch to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

The arrival of Costa coincides with Luis Suarez’s move from Liverpool to FC Barcelona and it therefore seemed like the ideal opportunity to draw up a revised top 10 strikers in the Premier League.

10. Christian Benteke, Aston Villa

Scraping in at No.10 is the Belgian attacker who impressed many during his first year in England in 2012/13 with 19 league goals, but who’s form and fitness took a downturn last season.

However, the 23-year-old is still among the most promising offensive players in the division and is sure to lead the attack for Paul Lambert’s team in 2014/15.

9. Wilfried Bony, Swansea City

Bucked the trend when it came to prolific scorers in the Eredivisie failing in England (think Alfonso Alves and Jozy Altidore) and netted 25 goals for the Swans in all competitions.

This form has seen a number of top teams take an interest in Bony, who also netted for the Ivory Coast at the recent 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

8. Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea

Another Belgium international now and another who scored at the World Cup, although the 21-year-old’s form wasn’t quite as good as everyone expected on the international stage.

Despite still being so young Lukaku has scored 32 league goals in the last two seasons for West Bromwich Albion and Everton, but his future at Stamford Bridge still remains in doubt.

7. Edin Dzeko, Manchester City

May not always be the first name people think of for top forwards in England, but Dzeko showed once again last term that he can be relied upon consistently for goals.

Despite the expensive arrivals of both Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo at the Etihad Stadium in 2013, it was the Bosnian who established himself in Manuel Pellegrini’s XI.

6. Olivier Giroud, Arsenal

A much maligned figure among football fans (including Gunners supporters) the France international continues to prove his critics wrong and scored 16 league goals last campaign.

The 27-year-old may not be in the same class as North Londoners legends of the recent past such as Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry or even Ian Wright, but Giroud is still a useful addition in attack.

5. Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool

In January 2013 this England international was a frustrated squad player with the Blues, but 18 months on and Sturridge is considered one of the most deadly forwards in Europe.

Last term the 24-year-old scored 21 times in the league to finish second in the top-scorers list behind teammate Suarez and with the Uruguayan’s departure the scoring pressure will fall firmly on the Englishman’s shoulders.

4. Diego Costa, Chelsea

A new addition on the list and a man who set the West Londoners back a hefty fee after scoring 37 goals for Atleti in all competitions in 2013/14.

Costa may have had a poor World Cup campaign with Spain, but his form for his club over the past 12 months showed that the 25-year-old possesses immense talent.

3. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

In one of the worst seasons for the Red Devils in recent memory Rooney was one of the few positives during David Moyes’ ill-fated tenure at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old scored 17 league goals and provided 10 assists for United and was also made the most highly paid player in the country with a £300,000-a-week contract.

2. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

Despite spending much of his time injured there is no denying that the Argentine is among the finest forwards in the world, never mind in English football.

The task for Pellegrini now is keeping the 25-year-old fit as much as possible as despite only playing 23 league games last term, Aguero scored 17 times.

1. Robin van Persie, Manchester United

Yet top of the pile is a 30-year-old who consistently performs at the highest level and could be the main factor behind Louis van Gaal having a successful first season or not.

Van Persie will arrive back at the Theatre of Dreams in good form as well having helped guide Netherlands to third at the World Cup with his four goals at the tournament.
