Liverpool have once again been left disappointed in their pursuit of a new left-back, after their rejuvenated move for Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno was brought to an end, with the two club’s unable to reach an agreement.

Transfer speculation linking the 22-year-old with a move to Anfield began earlier this summer, before the move seemingly collapsed. The Reds returned with an improved offer, believed to include the deal sending Iago Aspas to the club on loan, before the transfer fell through for a second time.

The Liverpool Echo reported late last night that Brendan Rodgers will now pursue other targets after accepting that Moreno will be staying put.

A bid of £16m was turned down back in May, with Sevilla holding out for more than £20m. Liverpool had hoped to use Aspas as a makeweight in negotiations, and despite the striker completing a loan move to Spain on Monday, the Moreno deal now looks highly unlikely.

That means Rodgers will turn his attentions to alternatives such as Swansea City’s Ben Davies, who is now top of his transfer shopping list. Rodgers knows the 21-year-old well from his Swansea days, and has watched his steady progress at first-team level over the past two seasons.

The Reds boss had initially drawn up a three-man shortlist, topped by Moreno, for the left back position at the start of the summer. Guilherme Siqueira has since moved to Atletico Madrid, while a move for Ryan Bertrand has been complicated by Chelsea’s reluctance to sell to a Premier League title rival.

Davies, therefore, has emerged as a strong target, though Liverpool will face competition from Spurs for the Welsh international.
