Newcastle United have completed the signing of Dutch International full-back Daryl Janmaat.

The 24-year-old joins the club from Feyenoord, who he helped finish second in last season’s Eredivisie.

He played in all three of the Netherlands World Cup group games, as well as the semi-final defeat against Argentina and the 3-0 play-off victory over Brazil, where he set up the third goal for Georginio Wijnaldum.

The player had been due on Tyneside on Monday, but his arrival was delayed after he felt unwell following Holland’s long flight back from South America on Sunday.

Janmaat replaces Mathieu Debuchy, who has joined Arsenal, at St James’ Park, after becoming manager Alan Pardew’s fifth summer signing – following the additions of midfielders Remy Cabella, Siem de Jong and Jack Colback from Montpellier, Ajax and Sunderland respectively, as well as forward Ayoze Perez from Tenerife.

Earlier in the summer, Janmaat was linked with a move to Manchester United, and it was suggested that the player would follow international manager Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford.

However, such a deal failed to materialize, and Pardew will be delighted to have successfully secured an instant replacement for 28-year-old Debuchy, who played 29 Premier League games for the Magpies last season.
