New Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert has described the ‘special’ feeling surrounding his belated debut for his boyhood club.

The England international, who was released by the Reds in 1997 as a 15-year-old, has completed a fairy-tale return 17 years later – following successful spells with Rochdale, Bristol Rovers and Southampton – for who he scored 106 goals in 207 league matches.

And following his debut in Liverpool’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Preston North End yesterday, Lambert was enthusiastic about the experience.
