Five Signings Tottenham Need To Break Into The Top Four, Including Chelsea Striker & World Cup Winger

Five transfer targets to fire Spurs into the top four this season.5) Ben Davies (Swansea City)

A move that could be on the verge of completion, Swansea City left-back Ben Davies has been the subject of much interest from Tottenham Hotspur and other clubs this summer after his impressive displays at the Liberty Stadium. Still only 21, the Welshman looks like potentially becoming one of the top full-backs in the Premier League, and has also been targeted by Liverpool in recent months, though Spurs look like winning the race for his signature to finally solve what has been something of a problem position on the left-hand side of their back four. With Danny Rose failing to convince in that position last season as Tottenham looked suspect defensively, Davies should be a major upgrade for the north London club as they look to bring Champions League football back to White Hart Lane.

4) Esteban Cambiasso (Unattached)

A vastly experienced and competitive defensive midfielder, Esteban Cambiasso is available on a free transfer this summer, and has been linked with Tottenham as well as several other clubs after seeing out his contract at Inter Milan. The Argentine enforcer has been a superb servant to the Serie A giants over the years, helping them to five title wins and the Champions League in 2009/10 as part of an historic treble under Jose Mourinho. With much of this current Tottenham squad perhaps suffering from being slightly too youthful and inexperienced, Cambiasso could be a great short-term addition for the side as they look to find that something extra to turn them into serious top four contenders.

3) Dejan Lovren (Southampton)

A top target for Liverpool, Tottenham have also been linked with a move for impressive Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren, who enjoyed a superb first campaign in the Premier League after moving to the St Mary’s Stadium from Lyon last summer. The Croatian international would certainly be a big improvement on some of Spurs’ current options in defence, with the likes of Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen putting in some below-par displays in a number of big games that ended in heavy defeats in 2013/14. Lovren may be favouring a move to Anfield, but if Tottenham can win the race for his signature, they could be landing themselves a defender of real quality to help them tighten up at the back in the crucial matches.

2) Memphis Depay (PSV)

A highly impressive youngster, Memphis Depay has had a great season for club and country, scoring 14 goals for Eredivisie giants PSV to earn a call-up to the Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup. The 20-year-old was then in fine form for his country, scoring two goals in Brazil after being given the chance to shine by manager Louis van Gaal, who has also been linked with taking him to Manchester United this summer. A skillful attacking midfield player with an eye for goal, Depay could provide Spurs with more quality in the final third after the likes of Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli disappointed for the club after being brought in during last summer’s ill-thought-out spending spree. Depay looks an outstanding prospect and could be the real deal if Tottenham can beat other big clubs to his signature.

1) Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea)

A potentially world class striker, Romelu Lukaku could be available this summer as he still faces a fight to break into the Chelsea starting lineup. Tottenham are among the clubs rumoured to be interested as they eye new signings upfront, and there may not be a better option for them in the transfer market this summer as Mauricio Pochettino looks to improve on the misfiring and inconsistent pair of Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor. Lukaku has shown himself to be one of the most prolific forwards in the Premier League in the last couple of seasons, spending time on loan with West Bromwich Albion and Everton, and it is no surprise to see him attracting so much interest this summer due to his enormous potential. Chelsea will no doubt hope to avoid selling the Belgian youngster to a rival, but it would be a real show of ambition by Spurs if they can land him ahead of some fierce competition before the start of the new season.
