Ranking Liverpool’s Squad For Title-Winning Credentials With Steven Gerrard And Daniel Sturridge Impressing

How useful each member of the Reds squad will be in potentially winning the league.

Liverpool enjoyed a brilliant season in 2013/14 and eventually finished second behind Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

It’s meant that for the upcoming campaign the Reds will make their return to the Champions League for the first time since 2009, but they will have to do it without key player Luis Suarez, who has agreed a move to FC Barcelona.

Regardless of that manager Brendan Rodgers will still be keen to challenge for the league title and has been busy in the transfer market and acquired four new players to date.

So CaughtOffside has decided to rank the Reds squad out of 10 to determine how ready they are to guide the side to a first league title since 1990.

Goalkeepers

Brad Jones – 3/10

The backup ‘keeper looks woefully inadequate when asked to play between the sticks and the Anfield faithful will be hoping the Australian isn’t called upon too often.

Simon Mignolet – 6/10

Bought as the new No.1 at the club and although started well following a £9m switch from Sunderland, has since proven to be a little erratic.

Pepe Reina – 6/10

Probably the best option, but is a figure that Rodgers does not want and the Spaniard is highly likely to be sold before the window shuts.

Full-backs

Jose Enrique – 5/10

Injured for the majority of the past 12 months and with a new left-back expected to be purchased in the near future the Spaniard may not be in the starting XI once more this time around.

Jon Flanagan – 6/10

The 21-year-old proved he was reliable last term and not only that can operate on either flank, making the youngster versatile and efficient.

Glen Johnson – 5/10

Although an extremely experienced figure the England international has been in poor form for some time and was a particular liability defensively last campaign.

Martin Kelly – 4/10

It’s easy to forget the 24-year-old is still on Merseyside and Kelly could well be moved on if a new suitor is found.

Centre-backs

Daniel Agger – 6/10

Despite being constantly linked with a move away it seems the Denmark captain will be staying under Rodgers’ guidance after all and is a useful squad player.

Sebastian Coates – 4/10

Never really made it at the club and spent last term on-loan back in Uruguay and Coates could struggle to get into the team with so many central defenders at the club.

Tiago Ilori – 3/10

The youngster was acquired from Sporting Lisbon in 2013, but it looks as if the 21-year-old will probably need at least another year away on-loan before he is ready.

Mamadou Sakho – 6/10

Signed for £18m last summer the France international has certainly been erratic and inconsistent, but has also shown enough talent to suggest he could be a big star.

Martin Skrtel – 7/10

The centre-back that Rodgers trusted the most throughout the past 12 months, although it’s certainly in defence where the team needs the most work and Skrtel needs to improve too.

Kolo Toure – 5/10

Filled in adequately at the start of last season, but was calamitous later on and is unlikely to see much game time over the next year.

Central midfielders

Joe Allen – 6/10

May have been a little expensive upon his arrival from Swansea City, but now settled in the Wales international has proven he can be a useful addition.

Emre Can – 6/10

At just 20-years-old there were some exciting things being said about this former Bayer Leverkusen man in the Bundesliga and Can is a true box-to-box midfielder.

Steven Gerrard – 9/10

The captain and talisman and after retiring from international football can now solely concentrate on his club from his new deeplying playmaker role.

Jordan Henderson – 7/10

Alongside Gerrard is another Englishman who over the past 12 months has proven those doubters of his top-class ability wrong and Henderson looks to be a fine player.

Lucas Leiva – 5/10

Has drifted to the periphery of the squad, although the Brazilian still has the capability to be a superb defensive midfielder.

Attacking midfield

Oussama Assaidi – 4/10

Never really cut it at Anfield and is likely to be sold this summer.

Philippe Coutinho – 6/10

Showed great promise last term and could well be one of the finest attacking midfielders in the English top tier in the near future.

Adam Lallana – 6/10

Signed for the hefty price of £25m from Southampton, but the 26-year-old is hard worker who has excelled at St Mary’s over the past two years.

Lazar Markovic – 6/10

Another new face and the noises coming out of Portugal about this 20-year-old are very positive, although the Serbian may need some time to settle.

Raheem Sterling – 7/10

The 19-year-old was one of the revelations of last campaign and his club form saw him play a big part for England in what was eventually a doomed 2014 World Cup.

Suso – 5/10

Impressed on-loan with Almeria in La Liga in 2013/14 and as a result could well be given a chance by Rodgers this time around.

Forwards

Fabio Borini – 5/10

Back at the club after a good year on-loan with Sunderland and the Italian could well be back at the Stadium of Light in the near future.

Rickie Lambert – 6/10

Hardly an adequate replacement for Suarez, but the 32-year-old local boy does offer something unique in attack and could well be a decent squad player.

Daniel Sturridge – 8/10

With his striking partner gone Sturridge will have to step up once again and take up the scoring reigns for his side – which he is more than capable of doing.
