Manchester United could break the world transfer record this summer, according to chief executive Ed Woodward, but there’s only a certain number of players around who would command fees approaching Gareth Bale’s £85m deal to Real Madrid last summer.

Here’s ten outstanding players Louis van Gaal that would cost that kind of suggested money…

10) Angel di Maria – Real Madrid

The phenomenal Argentine is arguably surplus to requirements at Real Madrid now, and with PSG struggling to purchase him because of FFP regulations, United could do worse than making him their marquee summer arrival.

9) Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund

Easily one of the best central defenders in the world, Hummels has been linked with a £16m move to Old Trafford – but with Jurgen Klopp rubbishing the claims, his price tag would likely be much higher.

8) Koke – Atletico Madrid

PSG are the latest club linked to Koke, who excelled in Spain last year. He’s recently signed a new contract though, meaning a potential transfer fee would be astronomical.

7) Arda Turan – Atletico Madrid

United are badly lacking the wide areas, and Turkish star Turan would provide the side with width, trickery and creativity in abundance.

6) Edinson Cavani – PSG

The Uruguayan forward cost £57m last summer, but his future is uncertain, as Cavani has recently praised the Premier League, and claimed that he no longer wants to be used on the right wing.

5) Arturo Vidal – Juventus

Vidal has claimed he won’t be joining Man United this summer, but we’ve seen countless times in football that players who denounce potential transfers still move to a club if the money is on the table.

4) Marco Reus – Borussia Dortmund

Another Liverpool target, Reus is likely to remain in Dortmund – but an enormous bid could tempt his club to sell, as they’ve rarely been able to hang onto their best players in recent seasons.

3) Paul Pogba – Juventus

Every big club in the world want Pogba, arguably the best young player on the planet – after his future in Italy became uncertain following the shock resignation of Antonio Conte. United would have some job on their hands to persuade the Frenchman to join the club he left acrimoniously in 2011, however.

2) Juan Cuadrado – Fiorentina

The Colombian excelled in Serie A last term, and at the World Cup this summer – but Untied would have to fight off competition from Bayern Munich and Barcelona for his signature.

1) Kevin Strootman – AS Roma

In all likelihood, Untied will wait until January before moving for the Dutch powerhouse – who is a favourite of van Gaal, but picked up a nasty injury with Roma midway through last term.
