Manchester United revive interest in Atletico Madrid star

Manchester United look set to revive their interest in Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan after Arturo Vidal snubbed their interest, the Daily Express reports.

The Red Devils are keen on new signings in midfield this summer, and could make a £32m bid for the talented Turkish international, who has also been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in recent times.

His agent confirmed interest in the player, saying: “We have received an offer from an English club. We will see.”

Barcelona join chase for Arsenal defender

Barcelona could rival Manchester United for the signing of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen this summer, according to reports in the Sun.

The Belgian international has been at the Emirates Stadium since 2009, but has found himself out of the first-team picture for some time now after something of a dip in form.

United have identified him as a possible target as they look to strengthen in defence, but Barcelona are also in the market for new signings in that position.

Roma say United target not for sale

Roma manager Rudi Garcia insists there is no chance of the club selling Manchester United target Kevin Strootman this summer, according to Sky Sports.

The Dutch playmaker, a favourite of United manager Louis van Gaal, was also linked with a move to Old Trafford last year, though he was one of a number of high-profile transfer targets to get away from the Red Devils in that transfer window.

United remain keen on him now, but Roma have no plans to let him go, with Garcia saying: “Strootman is a Roma player, he will be a Roma player this year. There is no doubt about that.”

Rooney wants to be United captain

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admits he would love to be given the chance to become club captain next season, he told the Manchester Evening News.

The England international is a contender for the captain’s armband after the departure of Nemanja Vidic this summer, though it is also thought that Robin van Persie would be the preferred option for new manager Louis van Gaal, as he has captained his Netherlands side in recent times.

Rooney expects the manager not to rush into the decision, but hopes to be considered, saying: “Of course I would like the captaincy but it’s the manager’s decision who he chooses.

“I think he wants to work with the players and then choose a captain from there. I’m sure he will look at the players now and make his decision in a couple of weeks.”

Chelsea boss has dig at United purchase

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has aimed a subtle dig at Manchester United’s big-money signing of Luke Shaw, the Daily Mail reports.

The former Southampton youngster, a £30m signing for United this summer, had also been linked with Chelsea in recent months after establishing himself as one of the most promising young players in England.

However, Mourinho believes spending the amount United spent on him would have unsettled the other members of his squad.

“If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, for Luke Shaw, we are dead,” he explained “We kill our stability with Financial Fair Play. We kill the stability in our dressing room.”
