Ranking Liverpool’s Squad For 2014/15 From 24 To 1 With Steven Gerrard And Daniel Sturridge Fighting For Top Spot

How the Reds players fare against each other.

It’s going to be an interesting season for Liverpool in 2014/15 as they look to build on their success last term despite having sold best player Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona.

There have been a number of new purchases however and here CaughtOffside ranks the Reds players against each other from 24 to 1.

24. Brad Jones

The current third choice goalkeeper is something of a liability and manager Brendan Rodgers will be hoping he doesn’t have to call upon the Australian too often.

23. Kolo Toure

When the centre-back first signed from Manchester City last summer he looked to be shrewd acquisition, but then the mistakes started slipping back into his game and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Toure on his way.

22. Martin Kelly

Something of a forgotten man at Anfield and now aged 24-years-old the right-back has hardly lived up to the promise he showed when he first broke into the first team.

21. Suso

Having never really be used at the club the winger went away on-loan to Almeria in 2013/14 and greatly impressed in La Liga and could well be given a chance by Rodgers as a result.

20. Fabio Borini

Sunderland tried desperately to sign the Italian after his successful spell at the Stadium if Light last term, but Borini has chosen to stay on Merseyside and fight for a place.

19. Lucas Leiva

Used to be a stalwart in the midfield, but a combination of injuries and a dip in form means Lucas is now nothing more than a squad player.

18. Joe Allen

Was considered an expensive flop when he first followed Rodgers to the club from Swansea City in 2012, but showed over the last 12 months that he can provide something in the middle.

17. Jose Enrique

Effectively missed an entire campaign last time out due to injury and whether or not the Spaniard can establish himself back in the starting XI remains to be seen.

16. Emre Can

A new £9.75m purchase from Bayer Leverkusen and a 20-year-old who arrives in England with much promise and a great future ahead of him.

15. Glen Johnson

Although the England international has always been defensively suspect, he made up for that in attack, although performances need to improve if the 29-year-old is to hold his place.

14. Simon Mignolet

Signed from the Black Cats last summer for £9m and things started well, but then the Belgian looked more and more shaky as the season wore on and is perhaps not the ideal No.1.

13. Lazar Markovic

Another new face at the club and another 20-year-old who has been billed as a real talent, with Markovic arriving from Benfica in a £20m deal.

12. Daniel Agger

Dropped down the pecking order last term, but the Denmark captain has bags of experience and is always a useful figure to have in the dressing room.

11. Rickie Lambert

Aged 32-years-old the striker finally returned to his boyhood club after impressing with Southampton and will be needed to help ease the loss of Suarez.

10. Jon Flanagan

Finally showed what he was capable of over the past 12 months with the ability to play in either full-back position and the 21-year-old could well be in the XI for years to come.

9. Mamadou Sakho

Signed from Paris Saint-Germain in an £18m deal in 2013, the France international is still erratic and mistake prone, but has shown enough glimpses to suggest he is a class act as well.

8. Pepe Reina

Although unlikely to be kept by the Reds as his wages are so high, the Spaniard is by far the best option between the sticks for Rodgers currently.

7. Martin Skrtel

The most relied upon centre-back over the past 12 months and the Slovakian seems to have thrived with that responsibility, although needs to sharpen up defensively.

6. Adam Lallana

The final new signing on the list and another who completed a move from the Saints, joining the Merseyside outfit or £25m and hoping to add some creativity to the side.

5. Philippe Coutinho

Under the guidance of Rodgers this 22-year-old is developing into a top-class attacking midfielder, but needs to add a better shooting ability to his game.

4. Jordan Henderson

Proved last campaign what all the fuss had been about when he was first signed and is a now a stalwart for both club and country.

3. Raheem Sterling

Although the teenager always had the raw talent, Rodgers has helped combine that with a deadly eye for goal and improved final ball and Sterling looks set to get better and better.

2. Daniel Sturridge

Behind Suarez the England international was the highest scorer in the Premier League in 2013/14 with 21 strikes and now much of the pressure to score goals will fall on his shoulders.

1. Steven Gerrard

The captain and at 34-years-old still the finest player in the team, with a brilliant array of passes that the midfielder employs from his new deeplying playmaker role.
