£20m defender signing confirmed

Liverpool have completed the signing of Croatian defender Dejan Lovren from Southampton for a fee of around £20m, according to BBC Sport.

The 25-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Anfield after spending just one season with the Saints, whom he joined from Lyon last summer and impressed with in his first year in the Premier League.

With some suspect performances at the back last season, Liverpool had been keen to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer.

Striker fails Liverpool medical

Liverpool’s move for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy is off after the French international failed a medical with the club, according to BBC Sport.

The 27-year-old looked a certain signing for the Reds after the club agreed a contract with the player, following their £8.5m bid to meet a buy-out clause in his contract at Loftus Road.

However, the Reds will have to look elsewhere for new signings upfront now, after some concern over Remy’s medical condition during procedures with the club.

Reds plot move for another Southampton star

Liverpool could be set to make a raid on Southampton for the fourth time this summer, as they target Saints striker Jay Rodriguez as an alternative to Loic Remy, according to talkSPORT.

The England international was another impressive performer at the St Mary’s Stadium last season, and has also attracted recent interest from Tottenham Hotspur in this transfer window.

Southampton will be desperate not to lose another star player to Liverpool this summer, having already seen key trio Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren move to Anfield.

Former star questions Lovren deal

Former Liverpool star Mark Wright has questioned whether or not the club were right to spend so big on the signing of Lovren from Southampton, according to talkSPORT.

Wright agreed that his old side needed to strengthen at the back given their poor defensive record last season, but feels they may have over-estimated Lovren’s ability based on one good season in the Premier League.

“Dejan Lovren looks a decent enough player and if there is one position Liverpool needed to address [it’s centre-back],” he said. “For one good season £20m seems a heck of a lot of money.”
Rodgers insists he won’t ‘panic-buy’

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists he won’t rush to bring in new signings after a move for Loic Remy broke down, the Daily Mirror reports.

The Northern Irishman needs new faces upfront to replace the impact of departing star Luis Suarez, and a move for Remy looked like being all but completed before a surprise decision to pull the plug at the last minute.

Still, Rodgers insists he is happy to wait for new players to come in, saying: “There are certain areas where I want to bring in players, but they have to be the right type. There is money to spend but I won’t spend it for the sake of it. If that means I have to wait until January then that’s what I will do.”
