10) Ricardo Quaresma (Porto)

Known throughout his career for being a player with superb natural talent but not the best attitude, Ricardo Quaresma has played for a number of clubs in an up-and-down few years, though he looks to be getting back to his best in a second spell with Porto. The Portuguese winger is his club’s number 7, and has all the hallmarks of a traditional winger, with great pace, skill and delivery from out wide.

9) Juan Iturbe (Roma)

One of the most highly rated young players in the world, Argentine starlet Juan Iturbe will wear number 7 for his new club Roma after joining from Hellas Verona earlier this summer. The 21-year-old has been dubbed the new Lionel Messi and is another flair player well worthy of the special number 7 shirt after the fine form and promise he has shown in his career so far.

8) Hulk (Zenit Saint Petersburg)

Not always the most consistent performer, but there’s no doubting the quality of Zenit Saint Petersburg’s number 7 Hulk. The Brazilian forward is an exciting and versatile player, who normally plays out wide on the right so he can cut in onto his ferociously powerful left foot. Although Hulk has not really lived up to his tremendous potential, particularly when he plays at international level, he fits the bill of a typical number 7 player, and is among the best in the world currently wearing that number.

7) Ramires (Chelsea)

Not a typical number 7 by any means, Chelsea star Ramires is a fine player and still one of the best in the world to wear 7 for his club. Despite not being a skillful flair player, the Brazilian is a superb midfield battler with an eye for the occasional superb goal as well, making himself an important big-game player for the Blues in his time with the club.

6) Lucas Moura (Paris Saint-Germain)

One of the most promising young players in the world, Lucas Moura still has some work to do to live up to the expectations placed on him at a young age, but the Paris Saint-Germain winger is certainly a typical number 7 in his style of play. The Brazilian starlet possesses superb natural ability and technique, and will surely become one of the best players in the world if he can put his mind to it and settle into life in European football. He is surrounded by many great players at PSG, and that will hopefully help him develop into another famous number 7.

5) Jose Callejon (Napoli)

With 20 goals and 8 assists last season, Napoli winger Jose Callejon is certainly among the best number 7s in the world at the moment, and was desperately unlucky to miss out on a place in Spain’s World Cup squad this summer. The former Real Madrid squad player has taken his game to a new level in Serie A, and could have provided the pace, directness and variety that his national side so badly lacked as they were dumped out of the group stages in Brazil.

4) Pedro (Barcelona)

Given the number 7 shirt by Barcelona last summer after David Villa’s departure, Pedro is certainly a typical kind of player for one who wears that on their backs. The Spanish flyer has been a great servant to Barca with high numbers in goals and assists in every season he’s played in the first-team, and is one of many of their current stars to rise to prominence through the club’s youth system.

3) Clement Grenier (Lyon)

A superb prospect currently coming through in French football, Lyon star Clement Grenier certainly looks like having the potential to becoming one of the great number 7s in the game. The classy 23-year-old can operate in a variety of attacking midfield roles, including on either flank, and a move to a big club in the future would not come as a great surprise, where he would also likely be a contender to wear the number that fits his playing style.

2) Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

A key player for Bayern Munich in their treble-winning campaign of 2012/13, Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery was a deserved nominee for the Fifa Ballon d’Or last year, and one of two number 7s to be make the top three. An outstanding contributor of goals, assists and creativity, Ribery is one of the great wide-men in the modern game and 7 is a fitting number to show for his achievements.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Perhaps the most famous number 7 of all time, it is no surprise to see Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in first place. The Portuguese superstar also wears this number for his national side, and also inherited from another great in David Beckham when he joined Manchester United in 2003. Arguably the best player in the world on recent form, Ronaldo will be up there with the all-time greats of the game, and fits the legendary status of the number 7 shirt.
