After 43 goals in 156 league appearances for Hibernian, Burnley signed Fletcher in 2009. He scored eight goals in 35 games before departing for Wolves.

19) Crystal Palace – Dwight Gayle (From Peterborough, £4.5m)

Gayle became Crystal Palace’s record signing last summer, and scored seven goals in his first Premier League season, including a famous double against Liverpool.

Southampton’s record signing struggled to make an impact in England last season, and finished the season on loan at Juventus after an altercation with a teammate.

The former Chelsea forward became Everton’s record buy last night, when he competed a £28m move from Stamford Bridge to Goodison Park.

Billed as the replacement for Gareth Bale when he arrived at the club last summer, the Argentine endured a miserable first season at Spurs, and will hope to do better this time around.

David Moyes splashed the cash during his brief reign as Manchester United boss, even breaking the club’s transfer record to sign Chelsea and Spain midfielder Mata.
