Manchester United’s Interesting Starting XI For 2014/15 If Louis Van Gaal Makes No More Signings

The Dutchman has hinted that United’s transfer business could be done.

Despite having only signed midfielder Ander Herrera and left-back Luke Shaw this summer, new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed his transfer business may be done.

The Red Devils have been linked with some of the best players in the world in recent times – including Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria and Arturo Vidal – whilst the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have left things a little sparse at the back.

Yet this doesn’t seem to concern van Gaal, who says that the squad he has could be the one that is used for 2014/15.

“We still have a month to go [before the transfer window shuts] and we are winning. Maybe we don’t need other players,” the Dutchman was quoted by the Independent.

So if van Gaal sticks to his word then this is how the United XI could look next season.

GK – David de Gea

The goalkeeper is firmly established as the No.1 at Old Trafford now and looks set to continue improving as the years go on.

CB – Phil Jones

Having been played in seemingly every position under previous boss David Moyes it looks as of thing could be going back to basics for Jones with a central defensive role.

CB – Michael Carrick

This may seem like a bold choice to include Carrick in defence, but like fellow coaching mavericks Marc Bielsa and Pep Guardiola, van Gaal is a fan of using a ball-playing midfielder at the back.

CB – Jonny Evans

After impressing over the previous 12 months and with Ferdinand and Vidic now gone this could well be the chance for the Northern Irishman to assert his authority.

RM – Ashley Young

Van Gaal appears to be getting the best out of this Englishman in a new wing-back position and Young could be one player that greatly benefits from the 62-year-old’s appointment.

CM – Darren Fletcher

After the best part of two years sidelined with a bowel problem, Fletcher is back and raring to go and is also now the longest serving player at the club.

CM – Ander Herrera

Having impressed in pre-season the £29m United paid Athletic Bilbao for this Spaniard is looking to be worth it and Herrera could well provide the creativity in midfield that has been so desperately lacking.

LM – Luke Shaw

Van Gaal is concerned about the 19-year-old’s fitness levels following a £27m switch from Southampton, but if that can be addressed expect to see Shaw in a more advanced wing-back role.

CAM – Juan Mata

After becoming the Red Devils’ club record signing in January following a £37.1m move from Chelsea, Mata was also then played in a variety of positions and needs to be in his preferred No.10 role.

ST – Wayne Rooney

Despite many modern coaches opting for one striker in the starting XI, van Gaal is looking to change things up and this means Rooney could play in his preferred advanced position.

ST – Robin van Persie

Alongside the England international is a 30-year-old who has a good working relationship with the new manager following their time together with the Netherlands national team.
