Analysing The Nine Manchester United Players Likely To Be Axed This Summer By New Boss Louis Van Gaal

There is still much to prove for many of the United squad.

It has been a good start to life under new manager Louis van Gaal for Manchester United as they won the International Champions Cup on Sunday following a 3-1 victory over rivals Liverpool in the final.

It is now five victories out of five for the 13-time Premier League winners, but after finishing seventh in 2013/14 there is still much to prove for many of the current squad.

Here Caughtoffside looks at the 10 players most likely to leave Old Trafford this summer and analyses whether they will be axed or not.

Anderson

The midfielder has barely featured for the club for quite some time now and endured a disappointing loan spell with Fiorentina earlier this year – with the Serie A club turning down the chance to sign the Brazilian permanently.

The only real issue standing in the way of the 26-year-old’s departure is whether the Red Devils can find any takers, with even £5m proving too much to draw interest currently.

Tom Cleverley

In what was an extremely poor campaign for the club last time out Cleverley claimed he was used as a scapegoat when the blame should have been spread a bit more evenly.

Whilst the Englishman may have a point, not many at the Theatre of Dreams would be disappointed to see the midfielder leave – other than van Gaal who seems to be prepared to give the 24-year-old a chance.

Marouane Fellaini

Despite having only joined United from Everton in a £27.5m deal last summer, the Belgium international is already being linked with a move away.

The last 12 months were hardly impressive for Fellaini and van Gaal has used the 26-year-old sparingly in pre-season and looks ready to sanction a loss on the midfielder by selling him, although a loan deal is also likely.

Angelo Henriquez

One the youngsters at the club that is often forgotten as has no real chance of breaking into the first team currently.

The 20-year-old is hoping his future remains in Manchester, but for the time being another loan spell for the Chilean looks far more likely.

Javier Hernandez

The man known as ‘Chicharito’ cut a frustrated figure last season as Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

That doesn’t look set to change any time soon either and with many clubs interested in the Mexican a change of scenery appears to be imminent.

Shinji Kagawa

Since a 2012 transfer from Borussia Dortmund things have’t been quite as fruitful in English football as the attacking midfielder would have hoped.

Although Kagawa obviously possesses talent the Japan international has found it hard to assert himself and several sides are keeping a keen eye on developments.

Nani

With van Gaal introducing a new 3-4-1-2 formation with wing-backs the wingers at the club have had to adapt to a more defensive approach.

For Antonio Valencia this was less of a stretch having often played at right-back, whilst Ashley Young has shone in pre-season, but for Nani his defensive ineptitude may have cost his place at the club.

Nick Powell

Another youngster who spent last year away from United on-loan and with competition for places fierce, the 20-year-old is likely to head out temporarily once again over the next year.

Powell is highly rated and after enjoying success with Wigan Athletic last campaign, could well join a Premier League side this time around.

Wilfried Zaha

It’s been an odd time with the Red Devils for this 21-year-old after becoming Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever signing as manager in January 2013.

Successor David Moyes played Zaha aplenty in pre-season, but then barely used the forward and sent him out on-loan to Cardiff City and van Gaal is still assessing what the England international brings to his team.
