A number of clubs have a shirt number that is particularly iconic, and has seen a number of the club’s finest players don it over the years and, for Liverpool, that number is undoubtedly seven.

The famous shirt has been vacated this summer, however, after Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona – opening up the possibility for a new club legend to make the shirt their own.

Here are five players who could be in the running to pull on the number seven shirt in the coming years:

Raheem Sterling

Electric teenage winger Raheem Sterling enjoyed a stunning breakthrough for Liverpool last season, impressing with his brilliant displays for both club and country as he emerged as one of the Premier League’s finest young players.

As it is, Sterling wears the number 31 shirt at Anfield, but his performances perhaps deserve bumping up to a number with a more first team flavour – perhaps the famous seven.

Marco Reus

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund this summer, a transfer that would send shockwaves through European football, such is the standing in which the forward is held.

Recent reports suggest that a move for Reus is unlikely, however, despite the undoubted suitability that the German international would have for the number seven shirt.

Daniel Sturridge

Striker Daniel Sturridge will take on even more responsibility at Anfield in the coming campaign as the club look to replace Sturridge, with the England international becoming the club’s number one forward.

His goals and performances for the club in the last 18 months have shown that he is more than capable of living with pressure – but handing the number seven shirt would be a real show of faith by the club.

Wilfried Bony

Swansea City centre forward Wilfried Bony is one of a number of strikers to be linked with a move to Anfield this summer – although his club have insisted that it would take a mammoth bid to secure his signing.

Should Liverpool manager to lure the Ivorian to Anfield, however, then he would certainly be a contender to take on the number seven shirt as one of the club’s senior strikers.

Suso

Young Spanish midfielder Suso has been in fine form for Liverpool during pre-season, with the signs being that a loan spell with Almeria in La Liga last season having allowed the player to really come age.

He is likely to be given more chances to impress in the Liverpool midfield in the coming season – and Brendan Rodgers could really show his faith in Suso by handing him the famous shirt, although it would be a left-field choice.
