Given that veteran centre-backs Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have left for Inter Milan and QPR respectively there is certainly scope for a fresh central defensive addition and a move for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen is on the cards.
The £10m rated Belgian must surely be tempted by a move to Old Trafford given that he is now little more than a back-up performer for first choice pair Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
The former Ajax man is also adept at filling in at left-back so could act as a solid alternative to big money signing Luke Shaw if necessary.
Van Gaal also wants to bring in versatile Dutch international Daley Blind, who enjoyed a strong World Cup showing and may well be ready for a fresh challenge.
The £17m rated 24 year old has won four successive Eredivisie titles and could offer van Gaal an option at left-back as well as in a defensive midfield role.
