The Old Trafford side are keen to erase the memory of last season’s seventh place finish and the club’s owners are seemingly keen to hand van Gaal the cash needed to drastically improve his squad.

The club have already forked out over £60m to bring in Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton and have three more players on their radar.

Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid)

The 26 year old Argentine had looked likely to move to PSG but that deal has stalled and now Man United are ready to take advantage of the situation.

Van Gaal is keen to bring in fresh wide-attacking options, despite the fine form shown by Ashley Young during pre-season, and has sanctioned a club record £55m bid for the former Benfica man.

The arrival of Gareth Bale impinged on Di Maria’s spot last term but the talented attacker still finished 2013/14 as Real Madrid’s leading assist maker.

However the signing of James Rodriguez could spell the end of Di Maria’s spell in the Spanish capital.

Mehdi Benatia (AS Roma)

The departures of veteran pair Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaves van Gaal with a defensive void that needs filling and Man United appear to have failed with their £10m bid for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, who looks destined to join Barcelona.

A move for French born Moroccan international Benatia will cost far more, with the Old Trafford side apparently ready to meet the Stadio Olimpico side’s £30m valuation of the 27 year old.

Benatia had a standout debut season in the Italian capital, helping Rudi Garcia’s side secure a runners-up finish in Serie A and playing a pivotal role in his side’s rock-solid defence, which conceded just 25 goals in 38 fixtures in 2013/14.

One wonders where such moves would leave the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Man United boss Louis van Gaal is also keen to complete the capture of long term target Arturo Vidal.

Vidal has played a key role in Juventus’s three successive Serie A title winning campaigns, scoring 28 goals in domestic league action alone over the course of those triumphs, and appears to have set his sights on an exit from the Turin outfit ever since former boss Antonio Conte left the club in mid-July.

A move for Vidal could well see Mexican international Javier Hernandez move in the opposite direction.
