The arrival of the Frenchman completes a very strong squad for Pellegrini.
After what had been a reasonably quiet transfer window for Manchester City they finally splashed the cash with the signing of Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto.
The defender is the fifth new face at the Etihad Stadium this summer and manager Manuel Pellegrini can now call upon two impressive starting XIs in the 2014/15 season, as can be seen below.
First XI
GK – Joe Hart
Still likely to be the established No.1 at Eastlands, but will need to improve on the form that saw him dropped by Pellegrini last term.
RB – Pablo Zabaleta
Considered to be one of the strongest right-backs in the division this Argentina international should hold his place in the back four.
CB – Vincent Kompany
The captain of the club and a centre-back widely regarded among the best in world football.
CB – Eliaquim Mangala
The latest signing for City and a player who at 23-years-old looks to have a great future ahead of him.
LB – Aleksandar Kolarov
Established himself as the preferred left-back under Pellegrini, but does need to ensure his defensive duties are as strong as his attacking.
RM – Jesus Navas
Arrived at the Etihad last summer from Sevilla and impressed during his first year as a winger in the traditional mould.
CM – Fernandinho
Many were surprised when the Citizens paid £35m to Shakhtar Donetsk for this defensive midfielder, but his presence played a key part in them winning the Premier League title last campaign.
CM – Yaya Toure
Following the departure of Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona there are many that now think this 31-year-old is the best player in England.
LM – David Silva
Since his 2010 transfer from Valencia no player in the English top tier has supplied more assists that this Spain international.
ST – Edin Dzeko
Despite the signing of two top-class forwards last summer Dzeko proved his worth to the team with 16 league goals.
ST – Sergio Aguero
Although the last 12 months have been plagued by injury the Argentine still managed to score 28 goals in just 34 appearances in all competitions in 2013/14.
Second XI
GK – Willy Caballero
With Costel Pantilimon leaving City for Sunderland, Pellegrini returned to his old club Malaga this summer to sign this goalkeeper for £4.4m.
RB – Bacary Sagna
Chose to leave Arsenal after seven years this summer to join the Citizens and try and compete with Zabaleta for a place at right-back.
CB – Martin Demichelis
Was much mocked when he first arrived at the club last summer for £4m, but Demichelis proved many of those doubters wrong with his fine performances.
CB – Matija Nastasic
Sidelined for much of last term with injury, the Serbian is still only 21-years-old and could well develop into a top-class star.
LB – Gael Clichy
Has fallen behind Kolarov in the pecking order and will probably find game time limited over the next 12 months.
RM – James Milner
There has been much speculation concerning the future of the England international, but Milner’s versatility still makes him a great squad player.
CM – Fernando
Another new signing now as this midfielder also joined from Porto this summer and will compete with fellow Brazilian Fernandinho for a place in the starting XI.
CM – Frank Lampard
After leaving Chelsea following 13 years of success to join New York City FC, the 36-year-old is already back in England on-loan at City.
LM – Samir Nasri
Despite being left out of Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2014 World Cup there are many at the Etihad who are very impressed with this Frenchman.
ST – Stevan Jovetic
Struggled with form and fitness during his first season in England, but the Montenegro international has been superb in pre-season.
ST – Alvaro Negredo
Started life with the Citizens with a bang, but things tapered off towards the end of the campaign and the Spaniard will be looking to rediscover that form.
