Manchester United are hoping to launch a £50m bid for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria after his proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain fell through, according to the Daily Star.
The Red Devils have been chasing the Argentine wide-man for much of the summer as they seek new additions in the attacking midfield positions, but looked set to miss out on him as PSG held talks with the player over a possible move to Ligue 1.
However, the French champions later admitted that the 26-year-old was too expensive for them, paving way for United to swoop for him now.
New manager Louis van Gaal has already spent big on the likes of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer, and has more big-name targets in mind as he looks to build a squad that can improve on last season’s disastrous trophyless season and seventh place finish in the Premier League.
Di Maria, a Champions League and Copa del Rey winner with Madrid last term, would truly be a world class signing for the club, and his 11 goals and 26 assists helped deliver success to the Spanish giants in 2013/14.
United will hope that a bid of around £50m will be enough to persuade Real to offload the player.
