Ten Things Liverpool Fans Should Know About Sergio Romero, Potential New Keeper Signing

Here’s the lowdown on the Argentina goalkeeper target…

Liverpool are keen on tying up a loan deal for Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, reports the Daily Mail.

If you didn’t already, here’s ten things you need to know about the potential new understudy to Simon Mignolet…

1) Romero stands at 6ft. 4″, and hails from Bernando de Irogoyen, in his native Argentina.

2) He made his professional debut for local side Racing Club back in 2006, when he was aged just 17, making five appearances in the 2006/07 season despite his age.

3) His form as a teenager got the football world talking, but it was Dutch side AZ Alkmaar that took the risk on him, securing a €1.5m deal at the start of the 2007/08 campaign.

4) Manchester United’s new manager Louis van Gaal was the man who took Romero to Europe, and by the end his first season, he was the first-choice keeper for the Dutch side.

5) Interestingly, van Gaal claimed it was he that taught Romero how to save penalties, after the keeper helped Argentina beat Holland in a shoot-out during the 2014 World Cup semi-finals! The Dutch, of course, were managed by van Gaal…

6) Romero kept 18 clean sheets during the 2008/09 season, but lost his place in the team after breaking his hand out of frustration in the locker room at a Cup defeat to NEC Breda.

7) However, Romero’s AZ side still won the Eredivisie that term, with the keeper himself going one stretch of 956 minutes without conceding a single goal.

8) In 2011, he left to join Serie B club Sampdoria for €3.5m, but his form was poor at first, and came under heavy criticism from fans.

9) Romero was shipped out on loan to AS Monaco as a result last term, and despite being Argentina’s first-choice stopper, he only made three Ligue 1 appearances all year.

10) Despite being seemingly unwanted at club level, Romero thrives during international duty. He’s already made 54 appearances, and earned a World Cup runenrs up medal this summer.
