Reds desperately need to replace £75m Luis Suarez…
Liverpool only have 32-year-old forward Rickie Lambert as backup to Daniel Sturridge, and with a Champions League campaign ahead, they badly need reinforcements in that position.
Here’s candidates to fill the void left by Luis Suarez.
5) Wilfried Bony
Perhaps the most likely forward to arrive for £16m, Bony won’t fill Liverpool fans with too much excitement because he isn’t a household name, but he’d likely do a pretty effective job in playing a backup role to Daniel Sturridge. Bony bagged 25 goals in all competitions last season, more than the likes of Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, and even Daniel Sturridge himself, interestingly. He’s immensely powerful, and what he lacks in speed he makes up for in sheer ferocity.
4) Samuel Eto’o
Definitely not a striker on the wish list of most Liverpool fans, Eto’o is regarded as a possibility should the Reds fail to land anyone else before the end of the transfer window. He’s ageing, way past his best, and demands large wages, but the fact he’s unattached and readily available could make him a last ditch option.
3) Edinson Cavani
BBC journalist Ben Smith claimed Liverpool approached PSG for Cavani, and were told they had no chance of securing his signature. Still, he’s arguably the only slightly viable world-class striker option in Europe, having been made to play out on the right wing for much of last term. Liverpool fans shouldn’t get too excited however, he should be staying in France.
2) Mauro Icardi
The young Argentine is very talented, but also a complete maverick off the pitch, and Liverpool fans are uncertain on whether his temperamental nature would suit the tightly knit squad. Still, if the other strikers remain elusive, the Reds could plump for the Inter Milan attacker.
1) Ezequiel Lavezzi
Lavezzi is predominantly a winger, but he’s been known to play up top as well – and with the Reds usually playing a very fluid attacking system anyway, he could fit in almost anywhere. The PSG man is a superb dribbler, and works hard too. He’ll set Liverpool back £16m, which seems fairly steep for a 29-year-old – but short-term, he could be just the ticket.
