Arsenal Player Ratings Following Win Over Crystal Palace: Alexis Sanchez Looks Sharp, Wojciech Szczesny Has A Wobble

Gunners assessed following narrow victory over Eagles.

Arsenal began the Premier League season by picking up three points on Saturday night.

The Gunners beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Aaron Ramsey.

Arsene Wenger’s side were behind in the first half when Brede Hangeland headed in from a corner, but Laurent Koscielny equalised from an Alexis Sanchez free kick just before the interval.

Here’s how Wenger’s men rated:

Goalkeeper: Wojciech Szczesny – 4/10

Rarely involved, but looked a tad shaky on a couple of occasions, including an incident which saw him shank a clearance straight to an opponent. He better improve next week, because David Ospina will be ready to play very soon.

Right-back: Mathieu Debuchy – 7/10

Spent most of the first half camped in the Palace half, but he was called upon defensively more after the break, making more tackles than any of his teammates.

Left-back: Kieran Gibbs – 6/10

Did ok, before leaving the field with a hamstring problem early in the second half.

Centre-back: Laurent Koscielny – 7/10

Was at fault for the game’s opening goal, losing Palace defender Hangeland, who nodded the visitors in front from a corner. Koscielny atoned for his error spectacularly, showing the finishing capabilities of a top striker to equalise on the stroke of half time.

Centre-back: Calum Chambers – 6/10

Picked up a yellow card for a tug on Fraizer Campbell in the first half, but looked fairly solid on his Premier League debut for the Gunners.

Midfield: Mikel Arteta – 7/10

The skipper put in a selfless shift in the Arsenal engine room. He completed more passes than any other player on the pitch and also got stuck in when necessary.

Midfield: Jack Wilshere – 5/10

Still didn’t look fully fit and was replaced after 69 minutes.

Attacking midfield: Alexis Sanchez – 8/10

Created excitement whenever he got on the ball, although he was starved of space by a hardworking Palace side. Provided an excellent cross from which Koscielny bagged Arsenal’s equaliser.

Attacking midfield: Aaron Ramsey – 7/10

Not the Welshman’s best performance, but he still looked like a class act. His finish for the winner could not have been easier, but he was in the right place at the right time.

Attacking midfield: Santi Cazorla – 5/10

Poor old Santi. He took a load of vanishing spray in the face during the first half and it appeared to affect his passing. He gave the ball away far too many times.

Forward: Yaya Sanogo – 5/10

Lacked the required guile to create any chances for his teammates. Had just one shot, which was off target, before being subbed for Olivier Giroud on 62 minutes.

Subs:

Nacho Monreal – 6

Rarely troubled defensively and tidy in possession.

Olivier Giroud – 6

Won a key flick-on for Ramsey’s winner.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 5

Did very little.
