Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal looks set to deploy his 3-4-1-2 formation in a competitive match for the first time this afternoon when the Red Devils host Swansea City in their opening Premier League game – but the Dutchman has a growing injury crisis to contend with.

Nine first team players are unavailable for selection for the match against the Swans, something that is set to hit van Gaal particularly hard in defence, with Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans and Luke Shaw all missing, meaning that this makeshift back five is set to take to the field against Garry Monk’s side:

Right Wing Back – Ashley Young

Winger Ashley Young has been playing at wing back during United’s pre-season tour of the USA to reasonable effect – and is likely to continue in that role this afternoon with Antonio Valencia injured and Rafael not in his manager’s plans. Swansea will certainly be looking to exploit Young defensively, with the former Aston Villa man a player who has never been known for his work rate or defensive contribution.

Centre Back – Chris Smalling

Central defender Chris Smalling looks to be given more of a chance this season in his preferred centre back position, having often been used out of position at right back since arriving at Old Trafford from Fulham. There is a sense that this is an important season for Smalling to establish himself as a top defender, and he must take on responsibility in such a makeshift back line.

Centre Back – Phil Jones

Much like Smalling, the shift to play three central defenders at United could allow Phil Jones to finally establish himself in his favoured position, having generally been used across the park since he arrived from Blackburn Rovers. Often criticised for his lack of positional discipline, Jones must be at his best if he is to help hold together an inexperienced defensive line.

Centre Back – Tyler Blackett

Tyler Blackett has impressed on the left side of van Gaal’s trio of centre backs during United’s pre-season preparations, but a competitive Premier League game will be a completely different kettle of fish for the youngster. Playing alongside two relatively inexperienced central defenders won’t help, but this could be Blackett’s big chance to prove that he has a future at Old Trafford.

Left Wing Back – Reece James

Much like Blackett, left wing back Reece James will have to bring his fine performances from pre-season into the competitive action, as he deputise for Luke Shaw this afternoon and, potentially, for the rest of the month with Shaw ruled out through injury. James has scored a couple of goals and generally looked like a threat in pre-season, but is another player who Swansea may look to exploit.
