The 10 Best New Signings From The Opening Day Of The 2014/15 Premier League Season Including Arsenal & Tottenham Purchases

There were plenty of new faces on display on Saturday.

The Premier League was back on Saturday as 14 teams went head-to-head on the opening day of the 2014/15 season and there was also the first chance for many new signings to impress.

Here are the 10 best from CaughtOffside.

1. Calum Chambers, Arsenal

With Thomas Vermaelen having been sold to FC Barcelona and Per Mertesacker yet to return to the first team, Chambers continued to impress in central defence following his £16m switch from Southampton.

The 19-year-old gave a mature performance and looks set to be a real success at the Emirates Stadium.

2. Aly Cissokho, Aston Villa

A few Liverpool fans may scoff at the inclusion of this left-back due to his dubious performances for them last campaign whilst on-loan.

Yet although Cissokho’s positioning was sometimes a little wayward the Frenchman got forward well and kept Bojan quiet.

3. Aaron Cresswell, West Ham United

The Hammers lost in an extremely cruel and unjust way thanks to a 91st minute winner from Tottenham Hotspur, but this was a fine debut for Cresswell.

The full-back looked good on the ball, kept Erik Lamela quiet and provided some good balls up to Carlton Cole.

4. Mathieu Debuchy, Arsenal

Got forward at every available opportunity and appears to have already struck up a good understanding with fellow new signing Alexis Sanchez.

Debuchy was also on hand in the box to take the shot that was parried into Aaron Ramsey’s path for a stoppage time winner.

5. Eric Dier, Tottenham Hotspur

Admittedly the youngster was a little shaky at times following his first game after a £4m transfer from Sporting Lisbon, but it was a great debut in the end thanks to the defender scoring the winner.

Dier also looked more comfortable after being shifted to right-back and the 20-year-old could turn out to be a fine purchase.

6. Lukasz Fabianski, Swansea City

The capabilities of this goalkeeper were known during his time under the guidance of Arsene Wenger and now as a No.1 the Pole looks set to flourish.

As Swansea surprisingly beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford, Fabianski made a string of fine saves to keep the Red Devils at bay.

7. Martin Kelly, Crystal Palace

Was thrown in at the deep-end after completing his transfer from Anfield and impressed on what was a tough days for the Eagles.

Palace lost manager Tony Pulis suddenly last week and against Wenger’s men they showed signs that things would be OK regardless.

8. Jack Rodwell, Sunderland

Before being taken off to save his fitness the £10m midfielder was the best player on the park during an exciting 2-2 draw between West Bromwich Albion and the Blacks Cats.

Rodwell finally ended his nightmare time at Manchester City this summer and at the Stadium of Light looks set to play a much more important role.

9. Philippe Senderos, Aston Villa

Another who has been much mocked during his time in the English top tier with both the Gunners and Fulham, but Senderos was assured at the back.

The Switzerland international slotted in brilliantly alongside captain Ron Vlaar and Stoke City striker Mame Biram Diouf never got going as a result.

10. Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea City

Was bought back to the Liberty Stadium by new manager Garry Monk this summer and marked his return with the winning goal against United.

The Iceland international was also on hand to provide the assist for Sung-Yong Ki for the Swans’ opener.
