Manchester United’s attempts to secure a world class signing this summer look set to continue, with the Red Devils having been linked with am ambitious swoop for Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for a package that would cost them £100m.

The Argentina international would be an intriguing signing, however, having spent much of his career as a winger – something which van Gaal does not tend to play with in his favoured 3-4-1-2 system.

Signing di Maria could hint at an early change in thinking from the Dutchman, but there are also alternative ways for United to accommodate di Maria, as well as £15m defensive target Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon:

GK) David de Gea

The Spaniard is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and will be first choice when available.

CB) Chris Smalling

The young Englishman has looked reasonable when played at centre back for United, but this is a huge season for the former Fulhman man.

CB) Jonny Evans

Centre back Jonny Evans was a surprise contender for the United captaincy, and is a fine player when fit.

CB) Marcos Rojo

United remain keen on athletic defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon, who would be likely to slot in on the left side of the three centre backs.

RWB) Antonio Valencia

Ecuador international Antonio Valencia seems to be van Gaal’s favoured choice at right wing back.

LWB) Luke Shaw

The new signing from Southampton is likely to take over duties at left wing back on his return from Southampton.

CM) Ander Herrera

The Spaniard, signed from Athletic Bilbao this summer, is likely to be a key part of the United team.

CM) Angel di Maria

With the left sided place taken up by Luke Shaw and front three Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie likely to be set in stone, the only real vacancy that di Maria could fill if he moved to Old Trafford is in central midfield. The Argentine is not a naturally central player, but has appeared there for both club and country over the last twelve months, with his industry and energy in the centre, which can cover for his lack of defensive awareness, making it a distinct possibility.

ACM) Juan Mata

Playmaker Juan Mata is likely to be seen as United’s chief creative presence this season.

SC) Wayne Rooney

The United captain kicked his season off with a goal against Swansea.

SC) Robin van Persie

Once he is up to match fitness, striker Robin van Persie will be a key part of van Gaal’s set up.
