David de Gea – 8 – The Spaniard is one of the world’s fnest young goalkeepers.

Anders Lindegaard – 5 – Has never looked better than being passable cover, may leave.

Rafael – 6 – The Brazilian has always had potential, but doesn’t seem to be in van Gaal’s plans.

Phil Jones – 6 – Needs to start establishing himself in the first team at Old Trafford.

Jonny Evans – 7 – A good defender when fit, but his injury problems are a real concern.

Chris Smalling – 6 – As with Jones, needs to start showing the potential that persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to buy him.

Luke Shaw – 7 – Almost limitless potential, but not yet better than being an above average Premier League left back.

Tyler Blackett – 6 – Did okay on his Premier League debut, but highlights United’s lack of cover.

Antonio Valencia – 7 – The Ecuadorian is a good player, both energetic and creative.

Ashley Young – 5 – Perhaps not up to the standard that is required at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick – 7 – Not a bad player by any means, but also not really a difference maker.

Ander Herrera – 7.5 – A good signing, but may not be enough to shore up a poor midfield on his own.

Marouane Fellaini – 4 – It simply hasn’t worked for the Belgian at Old Trafford, a move may be best for all parties.

Darren Fletcher – 7 – A very useful all-round midfielder when he is at full fitness.

Anderson – 4 – As it turned out, the Brazilian isn’t actually very good.

Tom Cleverley – 6.5 – Gets a lot of unfair criticism, but little more than a back-up option.

Nani – 7 – A very dangerous player, but may struggle to find opportunities in van Gaal’s system.

Shinji Kagawa – 7 – Has been misused since his arrival at Old Trafford, could be a make or break season.

Juan Mata – 8 – An excellent player, building a system around the Spaniard will be one of van Gaal’s main aims.

Jesse Lingard – 6 – Impressed on loan in the Championship, but is probably too close to the first team for fans’ liking.

Adnan Januzaj – 7 – The Belgian has huge potential, but has been overegged due to his emergence in such a dreadful season for United.

Wilfried Zaha – 5 – It just hasn’t happened for Zaha since he joined from Crystal Palace, a move is probably the best thing for the winger.

Wayne Rooney – 8.5 – Rooney’s displays for United are consistently excellent and he deserved the captaincy.

Javier Hernandez – 5 – A good poacher, but doesn’t have the all-round game for a club like United.

Robin van Persie – 8.5 – Wasn’t quite at his best last season, United need the Dutchman fit and firing this time around.

Danny Welbeck – 7 – Versatile and hard-working, Welbeck needs to add more goals to his game.
