Predicted Tottenham Hotspur Team For Europa League Trip To AEL Limassol

Ben Davies to make his Spurs debut.

Tottenham Hotspur began their Premier League campaign with a last-gasp 1-0 win at West Ham United on Saturday.

Spurs switch focus to the Europa League this evening as they travel to Cyprus to play AEL Limassol in the first leg of a playoff.

Here is the starting XI we reckon Mauricio Pochettino will go with:

Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris

Michel Vorm, who has been working alone on a personal fitness programme, is unlikely to feature, so Pochettino must choose between Lloris and Brad Friedel. He will probably go for the Frenchman over the 43-year-old American.

Right-back: Kyle Naughton

Naughton only played for 29 minutes at the weekend and he will be suspended for Sunday’s clash with Queens Park Rangers, so he will start at right full-back. Kyle Walker is still sidelined with a pelvic problem.

Left-back: Ben Davies

Having remained on the bench throughout the 1-0 win at West Ham, Davies will be handed his Spurs debut in Cyprus.

Centre-back: Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen did not play a minute of Tottenham’s preseason friendly programme, so Pochettino may see tonight’s match as an ideal opportunity to give the Belgian some much-needed game time.

Centre-back: Michael Dawson

Younes Kaboul and Eric Dier, who will be needed to play at right-back, will probably be saved for Sunday. Zeki Fryers could come off the bench to replace Dawson or Vertonghen in the second half tonight.

Midfield: Paulinho

The Brazilian was given extra time off after a busy World Cup campaign, but he has travelled to Cyprus and should feature. Mousa Dembele may replace him off the bench, or vice versa.

Midfield: Tom Carroll

Carroll is a very tidy ball player, whose passing skills will serve him well in this tie.

Attacking midfield: Erik Lamela

Lamela did not hit top gear at Upton Park, but an opportunity to shine against lesser opposition could be just the boost he needs.

Attacking midfield: Lewis Holtby

The energetic Holtby could be key in helping Paulinho/Dembele and Carroll to win the midfield battle. He is also a genuine goal threat.

Attacking midfield: Andros Townsend

Townsend was very lively during his substitute appearance against West Ham. He should start.

Roberto Soldado: Forward

The Spaniard scored five Europa League goals last season. He is expected to lead the Spurs attack.
