Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal looks set to wield the axe on his first-team squad before the end of the summer transfer window, with the Daily Express reporting that the Dutchman has put three players up for loan.

With United reportedly targeting some big names before the transfer window closes, including Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria in what would likely be a club-record deal, there will be little room for passengers in his squad.

Despite winning the Premier League title just over a year ago, United have had far too many under-performers in their ranks in recent times and van Gaal has now selected three that will be sent out on temporary moves after struggling to find buyers.

It is thought that this development has attracted the interest of as many as seven clubs.

3) Wilfried Zaha

Wanted by his old club Crystal Palace, Wilfried Zaha could also be a loan target for Newcastle United and newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers. The England winger has badly struggled since moving to Old Trafford last summer and could do with some regular first-team football to get his once-promising career back on track.

2) Tom Cleverley

An unpopular figure at Old Trafford, United could now be set to get rid of midfielder Tom Cleverley, who is already facing a struggle to break into United’s first-team with the arrival of Ander Herrera earlier this summer. Everton and West Ham United are said to be the two clubs interested in taking him on for the 2014/15 season.

1) Danny Welbeck

Despite showing promise in his days as a youngster, Danny Welbeck hasn’t progressed as hoped and now looks set for the axe under van Gaal, who is content with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez as his striker options. Hull City and Sunderland are the two clubs thought to be weighing up bids for the 23-year-old, who could shine at a mid-table Premier League club, but who doesn’t really look top-four quality, despite surprise links elsewhere with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
