Manchester United look set to loan out midfield flop Shinji Kagawa back to his old club Borussia Dortmund as they close in on the signing of Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.

The Red Devils have had Kagawa on their books for two years now since he moved to Old Trafford after becoming one of the most impressive attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga during his time with Dortmund.

However, the Japanese international has not managed to replicate his best form in the Premier League, often being among the substitutes and failing to make a great impression on the pitch when he has played.

Despite the loan exit of Nani to Sporting Lisbon this summer, the imminent arrival of Di Maria at United will still greatly limit Kagawa’s first-team opportunities this season after he has failed to impress new manager Louis van Gaal in pre-season.

The likes of Adnan Januzaj, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia will also likely remain ahead of the 25-year-old in the pecking order as van Gaal ponders how to fit in Di Maria among his crop of attacking midfield players.

Dortmund look in need of new signings after a difficult start in the Bundesliga, suffering an opening day defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen, and Kagawa could help replace the influence of Mario Goetze as the side’s creative force, with Jurgen Klopp’s side still looking like missing the German international since he made the move to rivals Bayern Munich.

Marco Reus could also be on his way out of the club before the end of the summer as he continues to attract interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, and his exit would certainly see Dortmund in need of a new attacking midfield player such as Kagawa.

Talks are expected to commence after United complete the signing of Di Maria, with Kagawa keen to return to Germany after two years in England and his old club also ready to take him back.
