Di Maria has been widely linked with a move to join the Reds in recent days and was spotted both leaving Madrid airport and arriving at United’s Carrington training complex during the course of the evening.
The £59.7m fee that has been agreed represents a smashing of the previous British transfer record, which was held by Fernando Torres’ £50m move from Liverpool to Chelsea in the Premier League.
The arrival of di Maria continues an extremely aggressive 2014 from United in the transfer market, with huge fees also having been spent on Juan Mata, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo.
Despite this outlay, Louis van Gaal’s side have endured a frustrating start to the 2014/15 Premier League season, with an opening day 2-1 home defeat against Swansea City followed by an insipid 1-1 draw at Sunderland this weekend.
They are already playing catch up on the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, with a place in the title race surely already out of the question for van Gaal and his side – but the capture of the world class di Maria should help to return the feel good factor to Old Trafford.
