The Argentine has come a long way since.
Real Madrid midfielder Angel di Maria is on the verge of completing a British record £60m transfer to Manchester United, which is a long way from the first fee paid for the Argentine.
Di Maria has revealed then when he first made the move from his local side Torito to Rosario Central the amount his new club had to cough up was significantly less than United’s outlay.
“They drove a hard bargain to release me,” the 26-year-old was quoted by the Independent.
“The transfer fee was 35 footballs. That probably puts into perspective where I was and how much it took to get me.
“Mind you I was very young, about four so I’m not sure it really counts.”
Di Maria is expected to complete his move to Old Trafford this week and the amount paid for him will eclipse the £50m Chelsea sanctioned for Fernando Torres in January 2011.
It will also take the Red Devils’ spending for the summer to well over £100m having already signed Ander Herrera (£29m), Luke Shaw (£27m) and Marcos Rojo (£16m).
Di Maria joined Madrid from Benfica in 2010 for around £32m and has since played 190 times for the Spanish giants in all competitions, winning La Liga, two Copa del Reys and the Champions League.
The Argentina international will now represent a marquee signing for manager Louis van Gaal and will be tasked with helping United back to the top of the Premier League.
