5) Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid to Bayern Munich)

With Bayern Munich confirming negotations with Real Madrid for the signing of experienced midfielder Xabi Alonso, all that is needed now is a medical for this move to be finalised. The 32-year-old is expected to undergo this procedure today and complete this somewhat surprise move to the Allianz Arena within the next day or so.

4) Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint-Germain to Arsenal)

Linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea for so much of the summer, Paris Saint-Germain starlet looks increasingly likely to be on the move in the very near future after repeatedly rejecting the offer to renew his contract at the Parc des Princes. With Arsenal appearing to miss out on the likes of Real Madrid star Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, Rabiot could make a great alternative in midfield to add some depth and provide cover for the injured Mikel Arteta. Available for a bargain £8.6m, it would be no surprise to see this deal go through in the next couple of days.

3) Koke (Atletico Madrid to Barcelona)

With Barcelona facing a transfer ban for the next two transfer windows, it is thought that the Catalan giants are ready to step up their interest in some of their top targets, with Atletico Madrid starlet Koke among them. The talented Spanish playmaker is widely regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the world at the moment and was pivotal for Atletico in their superb title-winning campaign last season. A natural heir to Xavi, it is unsurprising that Barca are desperate to sign the 22-year-old and it could be that this move will be finalised before the end of the summer.

2) Alex Song (Barcelona to Liverpool)

Hardly the best midfielder in the world, but Liverpool could be close to pulling off a good signing here as they reportedly make progress in their efforts to bring former Arsenal star Alex Song back to the Premier League. After a difficult couple of years on the fringes of the first-team at Barcelona, Song could benefit from a move to a club where he would be first choice, and there’s no doubt that on his day he could add something to this Liverpool team. The Cameroon international is expected to move to Anfield on an initial loan deal with the view to completing a permanent transfer for around £10m next summer.

1) William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United)

One of the most exciting young midfielders in the world, Manchester United look to be making progress in their efforts to sign Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho. The 22-year-old, valued at around £24m, may now be United’s top target after they missed out on the likes of Arturo Vidal of Juventus and Inter Milan star Fredy Guarin. Although the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown a strong interest in Carvalho, United now look the favourites to snap him up, and he should make a good signing to improve on United’s current options in that position, in what has long been a problem area for the club.
