Following Angel di Maria’s record breaking move from Real Madrid to Manchester United, CaughtOffside reviews the most expensive Red Devil transfers of all time:

10) Robin van Persie (Arsenal, £24m)

Signed from Arsenal in the summer of 2012. Had an excellent first season at Old Trafford, scoring 30 times in all competitions and guiding the team to the Premier League title. Endured an injury plagued second year with the club.

9) Luke Shaw (Southampton, £27m)

Became the most expensive teenager in history when he joined United from Southampton earlier this summer. Already an England international, and at just 19 years of age he is likely to be a cornerstone of the team for years to come.

8) Wayne Rooney (Everton, £27m)

Signed from Everton in 2004, the new club captain is one of the most iconic players of the modern United era – scoring 217 goals in 443 appearances. He now needs to lead the revivals in a struggling team to be considered a true legend.

7) Marouane Fellaini (Everton, £27.5m)

Another former Everton man who has endured a miserable start to life at Old Trafford, after joining the club in the summer of 2013. He made just 21 appearances in his first season, failing to score while being widely criticised.

6) Juan Sebastian Veron (Lazio, £28.1m)

Another big money flop. The Argentine signed for the club from Lazio in 2001, and lasted just two seasons at Old Trafford before being flogged to Chelsea. He also struggled at Stamford Bridge, making just seven Premier League appearances.

5) Ander Herrera (Athletic Bilbao, £29m)

United signed the Spaniard earlier this summer, hoping that he would be the answer to their recent midfield problems. After impressing during pre-season, he struggled on his Premier League debut against Swansea, with United losing 2-1.

4) Rio Ferdinand (Leeds United, £29.3m)

Ferdinand joined United from Leeds in 2002, and was vital in the club’s success over the following decade, winning a whole host of trophies in both domestic and European competitions. He made 455 appearances for the club.

3) Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur, £30.75m)

Became United’s record signing in 2008, and spent four decent years at United while never quite discovering the form he showed for former club Tottenham. However, he still managed 56 goals in 149 appearances.

2) Juan Mata (Chelsea, £37.1m)

Signed by David Moyes as United’s former boss attempted to turn around his fortunes. The former Chelsea man, signed in January of this year, has made a solid start to his United career, scoring seven league goals in his first 17 games.

1) Angel di Maria (Real Madrid, £59.7m)

Louis van Gaal will be hoping that the Argentine is the answer to his problems after a miserable start to life at Old Trafford. The former Benfica and Real Madrid man is regarded as one of the best players in the world.
