On Monday the 2014 summer transfer window will shut and Premier League clubs are still desperately seeking recruitment before deadline day passes.

For Arsenal this is no different and there are a number of players on their shortlist that Arsene Wenger will be hoping to sign. Here are the key targets for the Gunners.

Toby Alderweireld, Atletico Madrid

With Thomas Vermaelen having been sold to FC Barcelona in a £15m deal, Wenger needs recruitment at the back to bolster what is looking like limited options for the Frenchman.

Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertescker are a solid central defensive partnership and new £16m signing Calum Chambers has looked good since arriving from Southampton, but Alderweireld would certainly be a welcome addition.

William Carvalho, Sporting Lisbon

At the start of the summer one of the key areas that many critics said needed to be addressed was in defensive midfield, with cover needed so the more creative talents could flourish.

As yet no one has arrived though, but this 22-year-old could be the ideal solution and is thought to be available from Sporting for around £24m, which could prove to be a decent price.

Alessio Cerci, Torino

In recent times this Italy international has suddenly become strongly linked with the North Londoners, with his club president even admitting the 27-year-old could leave for the Emirates Stadium.

However, whether a new winger is really what Wenger needs with the likes of Joel Campbell, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott already at the club is another matter.

Mattia Destro, AS Roma

Staying in Serie A and a striker who has been linked with a number of English sides, with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho understood to be a big fan of the 23-year-old.

Destro could well leave the Stadio Olimpico and with Olivier Giroud out until 2015 due to injury, a new forward at the Emirates would perhaps not be the worst idea.

Radamel Falcao, AS Monaco

Another striker now and one with a bit more of a high profile than Destro, with Falcao considered by many to be one of the best finishers in world football currently.

The Colombia international is unsettled in Monaco and has been strongly linked with a move away, although Real Madrid are understood to be the 28-year-old’s first choice.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Borussia Dortmund

Back to defence now and another centre-back that Wenger has his eye on to act as cover and competition for Koscielny and Mertesacker following the departure of Vermaelen.

Sokratis himself was meant to be a backup at the Signal Iduna Park last term, but due to injuries played 42 matches in 2013/14 and greatly impressed, but whether Dortmund would sell to the Gunners after drawing them in the Group Stage of the Champions League is another matter.

Adrien Rabiot, Paris Saint-Germain

This youngster is looking for a move away from the Parc des Princes and the 19-year-old could be exactly the sort of player that Wenger would like to mould.

Rabiot is a central midfielder – and area the North London outfit need support – but has been touted by a number of top sides and will have plenty of offers put to him.

Loic Remy, QPR

This forward was expected to leave Loftus Road this summer due to the presence of an £8.5m release clause in his contract, but despite agreeing a move to Liverpool the France international then failed his medical.

This hasn’t stopped the interest from Wenger and the Blues though and the 27-year-old is still likely to be playing away from the Hoops come Tuesday.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton

This is a saga that has been rumbling along for some time now, with the midfielder looking to leave St Mary’s following the mass exodus from the south coast this summer.

However, new Saints manager Ronald Koeman doesn’t want the 24-year-old to go and the Gunners will face a tough and expensive battle if they seriously want to sign Schneiderlin.
