With the news that Manchester United look the clear favourites to sign AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao in a £51m deal, CaughtOffside looks at how their starting XI could look with the Colombian forward in their lineup, alongside other imminent arrivals.

Louis van Gaal has made a number of changes to the squad at Old Trafford since he took over as boss, and Falcao could now lead the attack, fitting in alongside fellow new-boys Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera, with two more signings from the Dutchman’s Netherlands World Cup squad also looking likely to go through by the end of transfer deadline day.

Goalkeeper and defence:

In a very different-looking back three, Manchester United look set to welcome the arrival of Daley Blind from Ajax in a deal worth roughly £13m. The versatile Dutch international could also have a role in the side filling in at left wing-back or as a defensive midfielder, but centre-back seems his likeliest position at the moment due to United’s desperate need for new players in that position. In what is likely to be the club’s first choice defensive trio, Blind lines up alongside Phil Jones and fellow new-boy Marcos Rojo.

Midfield:

In midfield, there could still be another new signing completed before the deadline as Louis van Gaal targets another raid on one of his old national team players in Nigel de Jong. The former Manchester City defensive midfielder, currently of AC Milan, looks to be United’s first choice in that position now after they missed out on the likes of Arturo Vidal and Fredy Guarin. Although he is hardly world class, de Jong should prove a useful, experienced addition to this Red Devils squad, lining up alongside fellow new arrivals Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria in the middle of the park.

Attack:

In a truly world class attack, Radamel Falcao’s arrival should prove timely after the club confirmed that Robin van Persie was set to undergo knee surgery. The AS Monaco star could form a fine partnership alongside Wayne Rooney, and his arrival should give Angel Di Maria just the boost he needs in terms of world class players to aim for in the box. One of the best strikers in the world in recent years, Falcao should prove a hit at Old Trafford.
