£77.2m: Rating and Analysis Of Arsenal’s Five Star Summer Transfer Window

A closer look at the Emirates Stadium side’s summer transfer business.

Alexis Sanchez
From: Barcelona
Cost: £35m
Rating: 8/10

As a signing the capture of the Chilean shows a real willingness from Arsenal to spend big on a proven talent and whilst the former Barcelona man is really yet to adjust to life in the Premier League it’s fair to say that it’s likely he will become a feared predator in the English top tier.

Sanchez has already bagged two goals and a lot more will be expected of the South American and with Olivier Giroud out until the new year Arsenal fans will hope that the adaptable attacker delivers the goods, the signs are that he will do just that.

Mathieu Debuchy
From: Newcastle United
Cost: £12m
Rating: 8/10

When you see your French national team right-back play out his contract and leave for Man City what’s the best thing you can do? Yes that’s right, buy the player who took his national team spot!

The former Newcastle United man looks assured at the back and a far more potent weapon in the final third than his predecessor Bacary Sagna, could be a very intelligent bit of business.

David Ospina
From: Nice
Cost: £3.2m
Rating: 7/10

The Colombian impressed at the World Cup and at just 26, a baby in goalkeeping terms, Ospina may prove to be a very astute option to help keep Wojciech Szcz?sny on his toes. A good grounding of experience the former Nice man should offer Wenger a solid back-up option.

Calum Chambers
From: Southampton
Cost: £11m
Rating: 9/10

As far as impacts made by Arsenal’s summer signings it’s fair to say that teenager Chambers is the one who has already delivered. The former Southampton man has looked calm, assured and ‘Tony Adams-esque’ thus far and the future looks bright with the youngster at the back, or indeed in a defensive midfield role if needs be.

With Wenger losing Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, and opting to not bring in a further defensive option, Chambers will be expected to ‘hit the ground running’ this term and has thus far proven more than capable.

Danny Welbeck
From: Man United
Cost: £16m
Rating: 7/10

A signing that could be considered as an act of desperation though may work out to be a calculated risk that pays off though there will be some who feel other options to boost the Arsenal attack could have been proven wiser. Welbeck had the best season of his career to date last term, netting nine goals from 15 Premier League starts, and though £16m in today’s inflated transfer market seems a fair price it’s worth noting that Liverpool paid the same amount for Mario Balotelli…

Conclusion:

Arsenal are used to seeing big names flee in recent seasons and as such a summer transfer window that passed off without any prized possession leaving is something of a success and given that the club has also managed to bag five high-profile additions the window as a whole can only be considered a triumph.
