Although transfer deadline day was inevitably busy as always on Monday, there were still a number of big moves that never actually materialised.

Here are the 10 biggest deals expected to happen that didn’t.

10. Miranda

The talented Brazilian centre-back was regularly linked to Manchester United, then Barcelona, and then even Chelsea – but despite many of his teammates leaving Atletico Madrid, Miranda chose to stay and try to help Diego Simeone’s side retain La Liga. Fair play.

9. Adrien Rabiot

Having entered the final year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain the Ligue 1 champions were thought to be willing to cash in on the 19-year-old rather then let him leave the Parc des Princes for free in 2015.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were among the Premier League sides interested, whilst AS Roma were also keen, but in the end Rabiot went nowhere.

8. Petr Cech

Following the return of Thibaut Courtois to Stamford Bridge after three years of success on-loan with Atletico Madrid the usual No.1 goalkeeper has been relegated to the bench.

PSG were thought to be leading the way for Cech’s signature, but in the end the 32-year-old has clearly decided to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place.

7. William Carvalho

A host of English sides were thought to be chasing this Sporting Lisbon star, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all in the market for a defensive midfielder.

Carvalho has a £36m release clause, but it was believed the Primeira Liga club were willing to lower their asking price to £24m – which was clearly still too high for this 22-year-old.

6. Mats Hummels

Before being handed the Borussia Dortmund captaincy by head coach Jurgen Klopp there were rumours that both FC Barcelona and the Red Devils keeping tabs on this centre-back.

It could well be argued that both sides could still need someone of the talent of Hummels having not signed that impressively at the back.

5. Juan Cuadrado

There appeared to be only one natural destination for this Colombia international and that was the Nou Camp, following Cuadrado’s impressive previous 12 months with Fiorentina and at the 2014 World Cup.

However, despite the fact Barca can now not sign players until January 2016 the 26-year-old did not want to join the Catalans.

4. Sami Khedira

Having entered the final year of his current contract at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu it was thought, like PSG with Rabiot, Madrid would want to cash in on Khedira.

The 27-year-old was linked with Bayern Munich, the Gunners and United, but looks set to challenge for his place in the Spanish capital instead.

3. Edinson Cavani

Unlike Falcao this South American did not make the move from the French top tier just 12 months after becoming a club record signing, despite many pundits thinking he would.

Cavani was pushed out to the right flank in 2013/14 to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic and this was thought to have annoyed the Uruguay international so much he wanted to leave.

2. Arturo Vidal

There were a few clubs linked with this box-to-box midfielder, but none more so than the Red Devils, who after landing Angel di Maria for a British record £59.7m were expected to make a move for Vidal.

However, both Juventus and the player himself admitted a move would not happen and the Chile international looks set to continue his good work in Italy.
