England 1-0 Norway: Wayne Rooney got his first win as England captain, scoring the only goal of the game himself from the penalty spot.

The Three Lions struggled at times, as their opponents frustrated them for much of the evening, working hard and keeping men behind the ball at all times.

Inevitably it took a burst of pace from Raheem Sterling, a foul, and an emphatic Rooney penalty to clinch England the win. Flick through the pages to see the full England ratings for the game below:

GK) Joe Hart – 8

One very good save at the start of the second-half to deny Norway from a corner.

RB) John Stones – 6

Assured performance on his first England start, and could get the nod against Switzerland.

LB) Leighton Baines – 7

Solid performance from the Everton man, who did his best to get forward in support down the left.

CB) Phil Jones – 6

Had a comfortable night, and looked comfortable starting in a central role in place of Phil Jagielka.

CB) Gary Cahill – 5

A sloppy error almost allowed Norway to open the scoring ten minutes into the second-half.

CM) Jordan Henderson – 7

Worked hard and controlled proceedings in midfield. He is now England’s first choice midfielder.

CM) Jack Wilshere – 6

Quiet performance, although there were still a couple of crunching tackles. Subbed half-way through the second-half.

RW) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 6

A comfortable return to the England starting eleven for the Arsenal man, but he offered less than Sterling down the opposite flank.

AM) Wayne Rooney – 7

Tucked away his penalty emphatically, but was otherwise quiet on his first game as captain. Withdrawn soon after.

LW) Raheem Sterling – 8

A bursting run into the box won his team the decisive penalty with a little over 20 minutes remaining. He looked England’s most dangerous player for much of the evening.

ST) Daniel Sturridge – 7

Showed some nice link-up play with Sterling, and could easily have scored had he lifted his shot in the first-half.

Manager: Roy Hodgson –

Subs:

1) Fabian Delph – 7 – Worked hard on his international debut, and looked impressive.

2) James Milner – 5 – A wildly misplaced pass was the most memorable moment of his 49th England cap.

3) Danny Welbeck – 7 – Forced a good save from the opposition goalkeeper soon after coming on, and looked lively.

4) Calum Chambers – 5 – A ten minute debut for the Arsenal defender.

5) Phil Jagielka – 5 – Had little to unsettle him during his brief time on the pitch.

6) Rickie Lambert – 5 – Very little time to make an impact.
