Following the conclusion of transfer deadline day on Monday the Premier League spending for the summer rose to £835m – a record for the English top tier.

Liverpool and Manchester United were the biggest spenders, but see where they feature among the five most expensive XIs in the division.

5. Liverpool – £133.6m

Having sold Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona for £75m, manager Brendan Rodgers was given licence to spend big and bought in no fewer than nine players for a combined cost of £117m.

4. Arsenal – £146m

There were no major departures from the Emirates Stadium this summer and more pleasingly for the fans, usually frugal manager Arsene Wenger sanctioned £82m worth of spending on new talent.

3. Chelsea – £188.65m

Many critics are stating that the Blues have been the most successful this summer having landed Diego Costa, Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas, Filipe Luis and Loic Remy.

2. Manchester City – £228.6m

Since Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008 there have been some huge changes, such as two league titles, an FA Cup and League Cup and millions of pounds worth of world-class talent arriving.

1. Manchester United – £245.8m

Top of the pile though is the 13-time Premier League champions who in an attempt to get back to their glory days have spent over £150m on new players this summer.
