GK) Joe Hart

One of the first names on the team-sheet, Hart will start barring a late injury.

DR) John Stones

With Glen Johnson injured, Stones could continue deputising on the right of the back four following a decent performance against Norway.

DL) Leighton Baines

England’s first-choice left-back. Man United’s Luke Shaw is injured anyway, and Ashley Cole has retired, meaning Baines has little real competition at this moment in time.

DC) Gary Cahill

The leader of England’s defence, Cahill will be especially alert to the danger of Xherdan Shaqiri.

DC) Phil Jones

It looks like Hodgson will favour Jones ahead of Phil Jagielka having selected him ahead of the Everton man to face Norway.

MC) Jordan Henderson

Henderson will likely be given the anchoring midfield role, following Steven Gerrard’s international retirement. From here, he will look to provide a platform from which the rest of the side can perform.

MC) Jack Wilshere

Wilshere’s technical ability and creativity will be key to linking England’s defence and attack.

AMR) James Milner

After Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s poor display against the Norwegians, Hodgson could field the hard working Milner on the right, due to Switzerland posing a difficult away fixture.

AML) Raheem Sterling

Arguably England’s best player right now, the teenager will definitely start, with the only question being whether Hodgson will risk using him centrally, or be more conservative and start him wide. We think the latter is more likely.

AM/FC) Wayne Rooney

Many have actually called for Rooney to be dropped, but there’s no way Hodgson will leave him out after just awarding him the captaincy. Expect him to play just behind the centre-forward.

FC) Danny Welbeck

With Sturridge crocked, Welbeck could be given the pivotal no.9 role. His pace means he has the ability to run in behind, although he’ll need to be able to maintain possession and bring others into play.
