5) Loic Remy

The Frenchman moved to Chelsea for half the price the Gunners spent on Welbeck. He bagged 14 Premier League goals last term, and provides the pace and dynamism Welbeck is supposed to.

4) Chicarito

Chicarito scores more goals than Danny Welbeck. He’s a far better finisher, and with playmakers like Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla, he would arguably have provided a cheaper and more necessary alternative.

3) Mario Balotelli

Liverpool signed the Italian maverick for £16m, the same price the Gunners spent on Welbeck. Although Balotelli is a big risk due to his off field antics, his talent is unquestionable, and Arsenal fans would likely have been slightly more excited by his signing than Welbeck’s.

2) Radamel Falcao

Granted, the Colombian’s wages are so large they border on offensive, but his pedigree is totally undeniable. Including the loan fee, it’s reported that Falcao will cost United £20m for the season, which is less than Arsenal will spend on Welbeck (including wages) for the campaign. If Arsenal are serious about winning major honours, they should have signed Falcao, potentially the final piece of the jigsaw.

1) Wilfried Bony

Bony ended up staying at Swansea despite heavy interest from Liverpool and Arsenal. In all competitions last season, the Ivorian powerhouse bagged 25 goals, which is far more than Welbeck has ever managed. What’s more, he’s more comfortable than the Englishman in a lone striker role, as he can hold the ball up and bring others into play.
